Morning , I’m suffering with back ache when I sleep, I have a pain in the middle of my back and I think it’s due to shoulder width ratio, after just shelling out a grand on a mattress which is very uncomfortable I don’t want to make the mistake again. It’s getting me down now as I haven’t slept properly for ages.

Anyone have this issue and recommend a type of mattress for my body shape that will allow correct spinal alignment. I sleep on my side.
I can try ones in the shop but I can’t sleep there to try it properly.

Thanks

For the past few months I have been sleeping on the floor - its felt good.

Why not try it for a few days (its free after all)
That might then indicate you need a firm mattress

I also sleep sideways and its not been an issue because the weight still spreads out.

good idea, I also have a blow up bed, I may try that too as an experiment, as that’s very soft.
I have purchased a thinner pillow today, I’ll try that for the next few days.

My missus has had numerous back pains issues

We randomly bought different mattresses which claimed to help back problems, but none seemed to improve the situation. We then stayed at a friend's house and she had the best nights sleep she could remember. The mattress was a simple sprung mattress (nothing fancy) Bought one and she has been far more comfortable at night. An expensive memory foam mattress was next to useless for her

I think it is highly personal though, as to what works. I think some places (IKEA, Dreams?????) let you try and if not good will allow you to exchange after a certain time period.

I also note that she has had various treatment over the years too (chiropractors, physics, etc.) But getting back into playing tennis competitively may also have helped her.

I had massive lower back pain to the point where I was seeing osteopaths, chiropractors and my brother who was a physios. Thing would get a little better then suddenly weeks of pain.

Had to give up so much stuff due to just being in too much pain.

Then I went to a mates house for a few days, was dreading the nights as the mattress was soft. Two days, no pain.

Turned out it was the crap Tempur pillow I had bought. 3 months and I was 90% back, so do check that.

On the topic, both my brothers were / are physio’s and independently all 3 of us bought Sleeping Duck. Really great service and great mattress. We tried the medium and the hard topper, setting on hard / firm.

Proper pocket coil springs as opposed to on with “micro coils” that are 10mm. And really decent foam layers.

Probably should say, I’m similar body shape, wide shoulders and a side sleeper.

What was the £1000 mattress that didn't work by the way, just for reference?

We bought a bed for Johnryanbydesign (https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/) late last year following a recommendation on here.

Well worth talking to them as they will advise based on your height, weight etc which mattress / bed to go with. We ended up with a ziplink superking (wife's side is soft and mine is medium) and a new divan. Both of us slept very well ever since

This is the bed Oakey, it’s not the beds fault, I opted for the harder springs. The quality is superb, just wish I had ordered something a little softer.
I did try a much thinner pillow last night and I did actually sleep all night without waking up 🤪

Thanks everyone for your reply’s.
