Looking back now (this is hard to write), Christian would have made it right for him... in a young mans sport Dani made the wrong choice, Dani had experience and age over a very young max, and should have stuck it out.
In my opinion his performance deficit in 2018 was too large to stay, he had to leave.

Out of the 11 races where both DR and MV finished, Max placed higher in 8 of them.

In quali it was 14 to 5 to max with DR on average more than 0.4s slower than MV.

Another season of that and he would be doomed. Perhaps he didn't get on with the car or similar but regardless the stats don't look good.

Try looking again and looking at the positions they had in every race if mechanical dnfs are removed...

I recall there wasn't much in it. Of course that could potentially be because DR was driving his car less kindly... Or it could be because Max was given a kinder strategy on engine wear. Or it could just be stty luck of the draw.

Ricciardo is good but not as good as the top tier. That he hasn't popped up in a Ferrari or Mercedes, despite seats being available, tells you where he's viewed. And it's not about money (now at least), as it's reported he's taken a significant pay cut to drive for McLaren.

When he left red bull, there was no seat at the other teams available though. Although... Ferrari could have had him for 21 if they really wanted to...

I don't think he'll play a no2 role again, which certainly limits his options.

Personally I think there was more to show than we have seen, stats wise. Best to hope for now is that McLaren make a good job of shoe-horning the Merc PU in next year and that he has a competitive car as a result.

There was earlier this month, though...

That's what I meant by Ferrari not taking him. I'd love to know it they really think sainz is 'better' or simply a better fit alongside leclerc. And also whether DR simply didn't want what would surely be no2 role again.

They're just doing what Mercedes and Red Bull are doing. Number 1 driver backed up by a solid number 2 who won't rock the boat. Boring.

Ricciardo is just another Coultard/Irvine.

Exceptional on a good day, but it has to be a good day.

Quali does not tell the full story, Dani took a lot more engine penalties ( 7 or 8 5 place penalties) than Max, & ended up not go into q2 on 5 or 6 occasions, oh but took 2 poles...

& had 8 DNF, 7 mechanical mostly battery and Pu related, the other was the collision in Baku with Max..

Should have stayed IMO, but hey ho..

Red Bull had turned toxic from Dan, I would have done the same, maximise the income whilst leaving the option to move if Renault didn't perform.

Can’t imagine it was all that difficult for him, he was clearly seen as #2 by Red Bull and was offered a huge amount of cash by a Renault team who wanted to improve (and possibly a bit of revenge on RB after all the criticism about their engines).

He now goes to a much-improved and improving McLaren team, about to get Mercedes engines and with no need to ever worry about money again. It’s probably his best shot at more wins, and maybe even an outside shot at a title.

Interesting I recall it still being in MV's favour but haven't got the motivation to fact check it.

Regardless I can't see any top team considering a driver that can't keep pace with their team mate in quali, top teams will be looking for drivers that are quick in quali and during the race.

Just my opinion, always open to other points of view smile

How everyone is enjoying the sunny weather!

I think it was still in Max's favour, but close enough to not say he was bonefide 'better'. It's a tough one as they both have strengths and weaknesses in different areas. Reliability aside though, with them both together at least one of them was normally capable of fighting for a podium.

Renault PU reliability cut short an awful lot of interesting red bull races!

Yes enjoying the sun. BBQ every day and typically lightly drunk come 4pm beer

Well it looks like the F1 season will finally go ahead soon after all. The Austrian government has now officially sanctioned two races behind closed doors in early July, and today our government explicitly named F1 as one of the sports allowed to recommence from next next week. The logistics around travel and quarantine remain the major issues, particularly for those who need to get into Europe from without.

The situation is currently as good as F1 could have hoped and will only get easier over the coming months no doubt. The remaining problems... well, the teams will just have to deal with them. There will for sure be people away from home for extended periods if they get snared by quarantine(s) but I think it's safe to assume enough staff to run GP's will ultimately accept that inconvenience and get on with it to enable their sport, their income, their career to recommence.

Within the next month or so most of the world will be as 'back to normal' as it can get until a vaccine rolls out, so we might as well all crack on ASAP, including F1.

Looking promising for F1 at Silverstone with yesterdays news. Yet, Silverstone had to cancel the MotoGP as they can't work around current restrictions. But they'll manage for F1.....

Sorry for the cynicism, but can't help but feel there's a bit of double standards here.

That is a shame for the Moto GP, but perhaps we can petition silverstone to put in some gravel traps biglaugh & reopen bridge for one of the races.

That's a great idea! For one of the double-header races they should use the old Abbey/Bridge/Priory layout (the old tarmac is still there), and the old pits and start/finish.

Wonder if we'll get any of the races FOC on another Sky channel (1?) like last year. I binned Sky Sports permanently in May come contract renewal and I don't think I'll be getting it again as its only the F1 I had it for.
