BBC Radio 5 Live brought Murray Walker back for the 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring.
It was quite a confusing start to the race under normal circumstances, Murray made things a bit more difficult for the viewer. I cannot comprehend how a live radio listener would have understood a single thing that was happening.

Youtube -Formula 1 Test Days 1986 Brands Hatch Mansell/Piquet
Very well shot and edited footage of most of F1 field . I was at Brands in 86 and the look and sound of this evokes what I found the most exciting era of F1 . It's worth noting that these 1 .5 litre cars had up to 1000bhp , more in qualifying, steel brakes and stick shifts . They also demonstrate how good a turbo V6 (Honda, TAG , Renault, Ferrari , Ford ) , can sound - the cars also had IL 4s( Brabham BMW, Benetton ) and V8 (Osella , with Alfa power )

Watching the safety car dart out of the way of the F1 car (or is it a curling stone?) at 6mins 35 was quite amusing! It was quite a confusing start to the race under normal circumstances, Murray made things a bit more difficult for the viewer. Great moment just now when Keke rosberg overtakes phillipe alliot, using his overtake button and a huge plume of un burnt fuel bursts out the exhaust. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1sVKTvvmCo
Someone had posted up full races from 2008 on YouTube all seemingly recorded off STV because they had the weather, adverts (interupting the racing) and all the race build up with Steve Rider and Mark Blundell. I rewatched Belgium, Valencia, France, British and Hungary. Still annoyed about Hamilton's post-race penalty in Belgium.
I also watched Australia 2009 (Jake Humphrey, David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan) and was watching the pre-race show for Malaysia (dominated by Hamilton lie-gate).
Annoyingly they all seem to have been taken down, assume due to copyright restrictions.

The cars were more dramatic though.
Depends on the era, and specifically what do you mean exactly by cars were more dramatic? For example, I don't find post-Gilles to pre-MP4/4 spectacular or dramatic enough at all: turbo engines were de-tuned for race; race corner speeds aren't dramatic because the cars were so softly sprung compared to today; for the most part race strategy - ie. avoid doing a pit-stop - was at the detriment to the spectacle eg. 1987 British GP is hailed as a classic largely due to Mansell's unplanned stop; 1986 Australian GP was dramatic because Goodyear's 'wrong prediction'.
All I'd say is that, , from trackside ALL F1 is dramatic. But in decades of watching , the two eras which made me hold my breath most were turbo 85-87 (I was at Stowe in 87 - and it was amazing ) and just about the whole V10 era - although I hated the grooved tyres and narrow track period . But 89 ..with a huge field with V8, V10 and V12 cars ? fking magic . As was the last couple of years of V10s - watching them through Bridge was astonishing , and the noise extraordinary.
But all time favourite ? The three days I spent at Brands in 86 - standing much closer than we do now , mesmerising speed, weird smells and thunderous soundtrack -not every turbo is quiet ..

For me, the drama of watching F1 is as much to do about how the cars look, sound and behave on track, at speed. They need to look like they are a handful. My favourite era for dynamism is the period 1966 to about 1984.For example, I don't find post-Gilles to pre-MP4/4 spectacular or dramatic enough at all: turbo engines were de-tuned for race; race corner speeds aren't dramatic because the cars were so softly sprung compared to today; for the most part race strategy - ie. avoid doing a pit-stop - was at the detriment to the spectacle eg. 1987 British GP is hailed as a classic largely due to Mansell's unplanned stop; 1986 Australian GP was dramatic because Goodyear's 'wrong prediction'.
From then on they began to look too planted on the road and even if they did require a massive effort to get the best out of, that wasn't so obvious to the spectator. At least they sounded great for another couple of decades - but we've lost that too now.
There is also the question of the aesthetics of the cars. Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder but I haven't felt drawn to the look of F1 cars for around 20 years.
I watched 1997 Monaco yesterday. What a great race. If you have forgotten just how good Michael Schumacher was or never believed it in the first place watching him display his talent in this race should remind you.
Sliding the car round Monaco in the wet 5 seconds faster than anyone else is one of the best things I have seen in F1.
