The immediate performance of younger drivers indicates how well prepared they are by the feeder series and how well supported the have been on their way through. I think it's also a product of the performance of the current breed of cars. Yes, they are as fast as any F1 cars that have gone before but if you listen to Karun Chandhok or Martin Brundle's opinions on the current cars having tried them, they speak of the stable and confidence inspiring nature of the current formula.

Also people seem to be of the view that extracting the maximum performance of the best cars on the grid must be harder than doing so in the less sorted cars when the reverse is generally the case.

Put George Russell in a Mercedes and he will return from the pits grinning from ear to ear having lapped within a few tenths of the team's current race drivers.

While it would make financial sense to put an talented unknown in a car you can only really have one in a serious team . The other driver has to be a name or else you run the risk of no leadership and bad results.
Doesnt really matter as much if you are forever bringing up the rear out of the points.
I think Renault if they stay can evaluate Ocon for this season and if he looks like they can trust him to bring home the goods they can get an unknown new teamate next year.
If he is forever crashing into Ricchiardo then its more of a worry next year.
He would be a bit silly to act up as then next year he will get a Bottas or Alonso instead of one of the juniors.

Seems to be a lot of gossip regarding Bottas moving away from Mercedes to either Red Bull or Renault.

Bottas as a number two at Red Bull could make sense.

If these rumours are true who is going to Mercedes?

Most definately not Vettel.

Red Bull?

If true, they are so pre-occupied with 'benchmarking' their talent that they are just going to continue to ps off their young drivers.

They aren't going to boot Albon without good cause, he was solid in his first season, brings a presumably marketable Thai connection and is far more 'on brand' than Bottas in general.

Has Toto issued a statement? These things often come in pairs. If not it could be a flushing out exercise by MB.

Nasty Renault have spun nasty Alonso the same story they previously sold to Daniel Ricciardo...

Can't help but think Alonso / Ocon / Abiteboul will be fireworks... where is the water to balance out all of that fire?

Alonso - Renault, clearly a match made in heaven.

Surely it now makes sense for the 3 teams with confirmed new drivers next year to make the swaps now so they can bed their new drivers in for the 2021 season which will hopefully be more conventional.

Sainz to Ferrari

Ricciardo to McLaren

Alonso to Renault

Vettel to his home in Switzerland

I’m sure they can all bring the date forward biggrin

I have a feeling Vettel might pop up in a management role in RB/TR.

No idea why, just a hunch.

What story did they spin to Riccardo, he threw his toys out of his pram and left RB because he had a competitive team mate and also took a payday.

Anyone with an ounce of sense knows Renault will not be competitive he is deluded if he thought he could have went to Renault and be challenging for a title in the short to medium term.

Maybe Alonso likes being in F1 after checking out the other series. Doubt he thinks Renault will ever string together a title winning season in the time he will be there but more likely to taste the champagne than those barren mclaren years.

When are people going to start talking about Giovanazzi's performance?

Unless you think Raikkonen is really smashing it these past two years you have to conclude that Gio isn't all that.

Ferrari driver pipeline looks a bit weak- Mick Schumacher doesn't look the child prodigy that people expected, David possibly 'as good or better' but even further off F1 readiness, similar Arthur Leclerc...

I think several drivers will have escape clauses if a top 3 team comes knocking... Anyhow, Ferrari have enough influence to get someone from another team - e.g. one with Ferrari power for the rest of the season
