If it ain't broke, change it anyway. Seems to have been the F1 motto since day one smile

https://youtu.be/sHOYB7AwPJ0

Do we like this? The social media reaction seems hugely negative, although in fairness it was the same reaction to 'point for fastest lap', which actually turned out ok-ish.

Personally I think those viewers that will understand the graphics relevance probably don't need them, and for those that don't, they'll just be in the way.

The whole 'chance of overtake' thing proved that regardless of how many data points there are, it simply doesn't work. How many times did it say something like '90% chance' when it was absolutely clear to anyone with a bit of knowledge watching that there would be no way past, despite the speed differential?

Even if it was accurate... Why take away the thrill of watching live and NOT knowing what will happen next? And it's not accurate in any case so that for me puts in firmly in 'distraction' territory.

I guess the theory is that this in some way makes the sport easier to understand. But I reckon if any of my none F1 friends watched a race with these graphics, I'd have to spend the first hour trying to explain how they get the data and why certain performance attributes matter during a race/season.

Just another for Amazon to butt into our lives by putting stupid graphics all over picture.....

I don't want to see Amazon adverts.... I want to see F1 Racing!!

All their millions of data points, and they showed Barcelona running in the wrong direction on the graphic.

This. In a nutshell.

The question is what are they trying to divert attention from........?

A bit like watching an action movie, but the picture is overlaid with members of the crew explaining how they made each part. Adds another dimension for sure... Also totally ruins the movie!

Hopefully it won't be like that.. Fingers crossed it's not as disruptive as it sounds. Although in the AWS video it looked pretty distracting to me, if that is indeed how it will be implemented live.

I guess they are trying things to hook in new fans that want simplicity and instant answers and are unwilling to invest any time or brainpower to work anything out.
You know, the current world being created by boris, trump and co.

I suppose that as they continue to push the F1TV service (not in the UK sadly..) this sort of thing does make sense. With the online service it will probably be very simple to turn this stuff on/off as desired.

I think like others, I enjoy watching the race uncluttered on the big screen, and my phone or tablet on the live timing and data. If in the future these new graphics/overlays can be turned on/off as I watch, 'some' of it could be useful.

I'm open minded... Just not very excited by this, especially if it's hard coded I to the official stream. Has to be optional - it's not reasonable to force people to watch a live race feed augmented with graphics floating over the cars.

This, for me, was the final signal to sit down in front of the TV and get ready for the race.

Simply spectacular, the formula 1 in its purest form, is literally the oldest memory I have of F1, the best presentation in the history of F1, friend you took me some nostalgia tears, thank you!

You'd have thought that with all the media technology we have these days, you'd be able to customise graphics by now to keep everyone happy slightly less grumpy.

You definitely can - but in this case I fear AWS want to show off how clever their technology is to every viewer.

As they say, just because you can do something doesn't mean you should..

For the overlays towards the end of that video, I remember all the way back in school being taught that numbers without measurement units are meaningless.

So I don't think I'll be getting much insight from this...

10 whats?

6.7 whats?

and so on...

You've only got to read some Youtube comments etc to realise that this is what a lot of the younger fans want. They're obsessed with this sort of detail.

The detail is what is needed, the arbitrary scores and percentages is now what anybody wants. Everybody regardless of youth or interest level mocked the AWS overtake chance and tyre wear graphics. this appears no different.

I would rather a Mass of hard data than some dumbed down point scale.
