I'd heard of this sort of sentiment where Brits didn't like Americans trying to impose racial segregation, but didn't know any specific examples. Thanks for that! I especially liked this bit:

"when American commanders demanded a colour bar in the town, all three pubs in the town reportedly posted "Black Troops Only" signs."

Upholding fair play, and always rooting for the side who needs the help. Makes you proud to be British biggrin

Typical old person. You can say things and get away with it.
I bet you wont see him on the grid this year wandering about but no doubt paranoia about covid19 had put paid to that.
I bet he gets no joy at all spending any of his money.
Obviously if they can put his brain in a young person he will have the last laugh lol.
Ideal candidate for Upload . The reasonably amusing tv show.

He's said far more shocking things and turned up on the grid wondering what all the fuss is about! But anyway, this year he has no reason to be there so won't be - only those with a crucial job can be there..

Regards last laugh... You seen his missus!? He's probably fairly smug smile

Sorry if I'm missing something here, but why are you glad they conceded to the demands of a colour bar?

The assumption was that the colour (color?) bar the Americans wanted was Whites only, the black only rule almost certainly wasn't going to be enforced by the pubs anyway.

Playing devil's advocate, part of the reason the US army wanted a colour bar was that when the normally segregated white and black troops got together violence tended to ensue. That's why they preferred black troops to be banned from some bars or even towns and whites from others. Or even banned black troops from going into certain towns on say, Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays and banned white troops from the same towns on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Needless to say the black troops tended to get the worst of the arrangement.

My understanding was that due to regiments being entirely segregated, black US military personnel greatly outnumber white military personnel in the area as of all the troops were black and only the commanders were white.

That's my take on it too.
A classic case of be careful what you wish for!!! Although beyond what is a rousing story of British sympathy and decency... I'd imagine in the end everyone was welcome in the bars so long as they had money to spend. The British like money too..

I've never really understood why Americans are so eager when overseas for everything to be the same as at home confused you see it even today when they're dismayed to check into a European hotel only to discover there are no ice machines. What does a person need a bucket of ice for when staying in a hotel?? There is Aircon and a fridge... Must be a bedtime activity in some way..

The US has gotten halfway there with its exported retail outlets.

We always make a personal choice in staying away from such ubiquitous brands although I did once try a Starbucks in Sofia, but it wasn't a patch on the local brew which was also a quarter of the Starbucks price.

Globalisation is a pretty bland thing.

I believe this take has a lot of wishful thinking, black US military personnel greatly outnumbered white US military personal in the region, if bars could only serve one of the two they would obviously go for the group that would give them more customers.

The point is that it was the white Americans asking for segregation. The bars saying they would only serve black soldiers was effectively them saying "no, we won't go along with your desires of segregation". In the end I doubt very much they actually carried out any level of segregation. They were under no requirement to do what the Americans were asking for, and obviously had no inclination to introduce segregation.

You are making are making a lot of assumptions there, and saying it was the white Americans who asked for it is a very collectivist perspective. It was what the commanders orders but you can't pin it on everyone. When I initially read the article I interpreted it as the bars simply following what the commanders demanded.

Well for sure, not every white American would have wished for segregation. It was generally a white driven initiative at that time though.

As for the accuracy of history... I suspect that the pub owners recalled it one way, the white commanders would have recalled it a different way and so on.. The general gist in the versions I have heard is that the Americans wanted the segregation they were used to at home, the pub owners were not inclined to support that - at least not in the way the Commanders desired. They assumed they would put in place segregation in their favour, the Landlords felt they could technically comply with that request whilst also sticking a finger up at the intent.

My personal suspicion is that the story has been embellished, were either group really barred from all pubs in the area?? Probably not - at least not for very long as the point would have been made very quickly. I can well imagine the landlords being a bit obtuse in response to a bunch of visiting Americans telling them who they can serve.

Going back to what Bernie said he was spot on about some black people being racist towards white people. I know this to be true as I was told so by an Indian girl and a black gentleman. Social media (or whatever they call themselves) were totally out of order, everyone is entitled to there opinion and you can’t tell people how to think.

Mixed race - his mum is white, his dad is black, so Lewis Hamilton is mixed race.

That doesn't change anything you wrote of course, but I hate the current direction towards a world where we follow the American "one drop" system and divide the world into "white people" and "not white people" instead of acknowledging our various heritages.

I am not surprised that there is confusion.

Quite a while ago, we were told not to refer to black skin, but instead say coloured.
Then that seemed to change, I think because the word coloured did not distinguish between black skin, brown skin or other colours, so we were told to resume using the word black.

Some businesses are responding to the protests. L'Oreal and Unilever will no longer use the words white or fair on their products, whitening toothpaste, and egg white ingredients are to be changed. The Black Boy pub is having a name change.
This is a motoring forum, so what will happen to black and white cars? They are still very popular finishes, but not for me, because so much cleaning is required.

Can anyone explain one of the current demands which is to remove funding for the police force? That appears to mean, do away with all police forces.
During a radio interview today, it was explained that the police would be replaced by Local Community Groups; Social Workers and Mental Health Groups. When asked who would be in charge, to instantly react to a terrorist attack in London, it was explained that there would not be any attacks of that kind, because all mental health problems would already have been resolved.

How did that old joke go, about the contract containing a Sanity Clause?

He's right some are, e.g. when I worked in Angola the local employees on Soyo would not work with Angolan Nationals from Carbinda province because they were a different tribe, I worked for a Swiss company, caused us a huge admin problem because we could never acknowledge this in our procedures but local management would tell us straight that applicant were rejected because of their tribe. But my experience is that the most racially people are Chinese.
