Autosport says it's a 2 year deal, so 1 year in a version of the current car next year, then a year in the new regulations car.

A once great driver leaves the sport. Comes back a few years later to a middling team with hopes for epic return to podium.

Haven't we played this song before?

Slightly surprising since Abitabout said they haven't spent any money on the engine for this season to cut costs.

Alonso at Renault what could possibly go wrong..................
A cynic might wonder if they haven't spent anything on the engine as they have no customers left to help cover the costs..

Also I'm guessing Alonso is cheaper than the outgoing DR.

I would say that his time away has shown him the backwater that most other racing series are.
Gets a year getting up to speed and influencing the new renault effort for 2022.
There must be a shut up and learn clause in Ocons contract , but I also thought he was someone that could be yanked away to Mercedes so they are probably worried they could be left with no top line driver.
All the more interesting for us as viewers if its true.
Now the renault boys have 8 to maybe 15 races to get the car improved this year.

If icon goes to Mercedes, or if he is simply outperformed my Alonso.. then in that scenario in 2023 Renault would be starting a new, competitive era with a 41, nearly 42 year old number one driver?

Without a big name they look less credible at a factory team. Every other factory team has a superstar. I am a bit of the mind
its another gamble for Alonso that maybe the Renault 2022 will be up there..
May all be hot air though and something lost in translation of a rumour.

The rate HAAS are going with the Ferrari engine seeing them jump to Renault instead and becoming their B team rather than a C team wouldn't be a shock

Careful with that line of thinking.. on that basis FERRARI would be better off taking the Renault PU too rofl

Also HAAS need to develop the ability to stop their cars before making them go faster wink

It worked out for Niki Lauda. McLaren were a clear midfield team looking to return to the front after 3 seasons outside the top 5 in the constructors when he came back for 1982. He delivered the title in 1984 and swiftly retired. But yes I take your point.... it wasn't the right move from Schumacher and I agree that this Alonso move appears to be the same.

Despite Alonso's divisive nature he is a character and F1 needs more of that. The overly marketing trained puppet drivers of today does get a bit wearing so from my point of view I am looking forward to him coming back despite being aware I am probably in the minority.

In a car he is capable of special things and I want to see the best drivers in F1 cars. I hope Renault improve enough to allow him to fight for podiums. If anyone will make the difference between finishing 5th or sneaking an unlikely podium then they have signed the right guy. A Vettel or a Bottas wouldn't do that for them.

It may not be so good for Cyril's chances of remaining Renault boss for any length of time as Fernando will not be pulling any punches when the car doesn't perform.

A big thank you to Riciardo for jumping to Mclaren and making it possible I guess.
Thanks to the many rule changes and budget cuts we may yet see anyone on the grid with a chance to podium again
for the first time in a long time.
I would bet that even with a reduced wage its still more than you can get in any other racing series so egos are kept in the manner they are accustomed.
