Can't help but think that Renault are using Alonso to paint over cracks rather than fill them.

I'd imagine a big reason for him joining is also marketing cash.

They must be hoping they'll have a decent engine by then.

I really don’t think the engine is an issue anymore. It seems to be more powerful than the Ferrari unit and at least as good as Honda.

What they need is a decent chassis.

Oh dear. Time will tell, but this feels like a mistake - for both parties.

Agreed. It seems hard to comprehend how this will be anything less than a disaster for both sides. Alonso is a divisive character at the best of times and combine that with Abiteboul......

It will be pure box office. I can't wait for the Netflix episode inside Renault next year.

im just hoping renault can build a competitive car for the new regs, i dont want to see him fighting for lower point finishes like he was at mclaren.

good move by Renault. Better driver than any of their other options and will bring in plenty of new Renault fans.
Surprised alonso is going to a midfield team but he must be confident they won't be midfield for too long considering the reg changes.

Either that or he's realised that he just wants to race and has no chance of a top drive, so he's willing to just have fun fighting for points in the midfield.

Doesn't sound like Alonso, but you never know.

Glad to have him back on the grid. Hopefully Renault can produce a competitive car and he can get amongst the front runners.

If not he will get stroppy.

Interesting. I guess they had to keep Ocon really.

Pretty certain he'll be fighting for lower points finishes in his Renault - whilst being overtaken by his old team. And most likely his Renault will still have a PU at that time that is actually less reliable than the Honda unit he used to blame for everything in his McLaren.

In fact everything that he complained about at McLaren is waiting for him at Renault pretty much. He's a rich man, why is he returning now!? Maybe he just loves to race I suppose.. Actually, maybe he just likes to have a public platform for a bloody good whinge once a fortnight??

If nothing else, it'll be dramatic..

For all his flaws he should be able to drag every inch out the car. However as we saw from ferrari and McLaren he's not a one man car improver.

Slightly surprising since Abitabout said they haven't spent any money on the engine for this season to cut costs.

Alonso at Renault what could possibly go wrong..................
