What, you mean kids who AREN'T the offspring of millionaires and billionaires can compete in F1? If you look at football, which has probably the greatest talent pool of any sport to pick from, how many top flight players are the offspring of other top flight players. In F1, it seems the most secure route in.

Well, Formula 1 is the equivalent of a single team in the Premier League, like Formula 2 is the equivalent of one team in the Championship, etc, so the analogy doesn't really work in my opinion.

When you've got however many drivers up and down the country (and worldwide) competing to get into that one "team", you bet money is going to play a part.

Wealthy, time-rich parents with extensive sponsorship connections and industry contacts and a reasonable chance of bringing up a child heavily interested in motorsport.

Swap motorsport for football and that still works. Whilst not motorsport levels of costs, the commitment from parents to support them to that level is pretty extensive and beyond many unless they are the 0.0001% who already appear to be truly special. My nephew is on the books of a Championship club, it's all consuming in terms of costs and particuarly time (particuarly here in the South West, where everything is far away!) I'd be interested to know how many professional footballers are from rural areas.

Opportunities to drive karts are vanishingly small for the majority of the population, but I don't think it's unreasonable for somebody to want to try and bring under-represented people into motorsport.

Mercedes are getting Ferrari engines and Red Bulls floors for the next race.

My mate Daz told me and he knows because his sister went out with a lad who used to work at Silverstone.
Them guys who sell the programmes are 100% gospel, as they are the closest people to motorsport other than the drivers in the cars.

Just like, you always get the best tips at the horse racing from the bloke behind the bar in the VIP area

I belatedly read our motor club's latest online edition of our monthly magazine and the following is the editors piece at the start of the magazine;

editor said:
I went to my first British GP as a three year old and have followed F1, along with most other motor-
sport, ever since, but I do feel we are heading for a new low with GPs as Liberty (the American pro-
moters) seek to increase the audience by levelling everything down to the lowest level and trying to
increase the drama by artificial means. The series “Race to Survive” is a figment of the truth by the
way it is edited, and it seems that team bosses are being encouraged to have verbal battles. It increas-
ingly becoming like wresting!

The whole Max v Lewis is so contrived. Max’s Dutch supporters seem to get to most of the European
events while those who like Lewis seem to get involved by social media. The Hamilton fans have
probably never been to a race of any sort, but worship him almost as if he is the Second Coming. If
you dare to criticise his fashion senses, huge air miles or anything else, they brand you a racist it
seems. Liberty don’t seem care where the races are as long as they pay millions for the privilege, sev-
eral dodgy countries and now three races in the USA!

There are bright spots though. George Russell is the next top UK driver and seems to handle himself
well. Sebastian Vettel is hugely articulate and also very keen on the history of the sport and recently
bought Nigel Mansell’s “Red 5” Williams. As he has got sick of Aston Martin being unable to pro-
duce a competitive car, then he could be the right person to lead F1 if we could get rid of Liberty!

I admit that I was dubious about Formula W, but I have warmed to it, and it seems to be run very well
without the scripted drama that is in F1. There is far more diversity amongst the teams and drivers and
the racing is close. Jamie Chadwick, is mixed race, like Lewis, has been as dominant as he was, in her
three seasons and it is a great pity she has not got a run in GP2 as yet. That would be so good for the
sport. There are some good girl drivers in other areas like GT, but not really in single seaters, while
there has not been a top lady rally driver for over 30 years. That is perhaps something that needs to be
addressed as motorsport is one of very few sports where male and female can compete against each
other on equal terms.

I'm kind of half of the mind it's just another old man spouting off about Lewis Hamilton given half the chance (this isn't the first piece in the magazine that's been dismissive of Hamilton) but it's kind of pissed me off a little.

Speaking as an old man, that editors piece really is typical old man moaning, of exactly the same nature as I've been reading for over 40 years.

No disrespect to Jamie Chadwick, but she's been dominant in one formula, whereas Lewis has dominated in multiple formulae, including of course his radio controlled model cars when he wasn't even sat in the things. Ms Chadwick needs to get unto F3 before F2 (it ceased to be GP2 in 2016). I wish her the very best but any comparisons with Lewis is ludicrous.

It's classic car club fodder too, or really any club, committee, parish council, at some point there'll be some failure in life who sees an opportunity to grasp a bit of power / status. They will give themselves a lofty title such as editor or chairman and will bluster about the place generally making sure nobody can forget they're 'important'.

The old man quoted above can't spell, can't articulate a point well, can't (be bothered to) research his piece (as he knows better already) and in any real world scenario would not be the editor of anything as he lacks the ability. Realistically he should be on PH moaning with the rest of us hehe

I appreciate the comments, I’ve actually written a response to the club although it hasn’t been acknowledged yet. It is however our big celebratory weekend and classic car show starting tomorrow so I imagine they have more important things to discuss.

I did wonder if my response was really not needed however after incredulously reading it I forwarded it to a few other motorsport fans and the politest response I got was that it was insulting.

I sent an email in return and then wondered if I was being a bit pissy about it all hence thinking to ask in this forum.

Alonso fan here too but I thought his rant was embarrassing and a bit cringey. I know it was in the heat of the moment but that's probably his true colours actually. Bitterness and clearly unresolved resentment. He basically still hasn't moved on from 2007.
