It’s British driver of the year, not driver of all time.

If Hamilton has a crap year, he’s very much not a candidate.

But anyway, as pointed out by others, it’s moot as it’s a popularity contest.
Just as well he did not have a 'crap' year then.

all things considered, he drove well this year. Toss up between Hammy and Lando for 2nd best UK driver imho.

I didn't know your mum let you watch UKDashCams. I think Del "Whiptail" Doohan deserved the accolade as well. Was it the Bromich Bypass Burnout or the Chiswick Roundabout Axle Chatter that got your #1.......?

Really Enthralled of Enfield x

It was a patchy season by Hamilton's standards, he's not usually been considered as anything other than having been the best driver most seasons he's competed.

That said, he's demonstrated extraordinary mental strength that he was able to come back at all after the mugging of his 8th title.

getting spanked by George must have been tough.

Hamilton seems about as relaxed as he's ever been. He knows he wasn't 'spanked' by Russell, as does his team, who still see him as the team leader, being overall quicker in both quali and races in 2022.

Hopefully, Merc will be competitive next season, it would be great to see at least an opportunity to get another title, in addition to the 7 he has won and the one he had stolen.

True. For him this probably was a great drive this season. Not having a top tier performing car and being on auto pilot like the majority of the last 8 or 9 seasons. Imagine it's hard to turn it on after cruising for that long.

You've clearly missed a lot of those seasons.

Ok fair enough, I’m not that familiar with his pre F1 career but 1998 and 2001 were worse.

What do you remember of Hamilton's 1998 and 2001 seasons?

Nothing, I’d not heard of him then, I was still in school and hadn’t really developed an interest in motorsport much beyond the top tiers and my local circuits.

Just going by Wiki saying his results in those years were statistically worse.

I confess to skipping a few, just like the early 00's where it was a dullfest. Otherwise not missed much since about 92.

Watched up until 2017, skipped a couple until 2021. Aside from Rosberg's win, which was still utter dominance at a canter from Mercedes, the result was never in doubt 15-20.

You've missed out. There were two seasons against a very fast (illegally fast, it turned out) Ferrari, which were a very long way from 'never in doubt' for Mercedes and Hamilton. A very different situation from the Schumacher Ferrari years, where we all knew Michael would win before the race weekend even started, with a sizeable car advantage and the other driver in the team employed to assist him.

1998 Lewis was with Zip karts whilst the rival Tony-Kart was quicker. Nonetheless, it was the year that McLaren came on board.

2001 was just a 4 race winter series, all in November IIRC. 2002 was Hamilton's first full season in cars.

I'm not sure what you are trying to argue or defend? I'm not saying Lewis was crap in those years, there may have been all sorts of good reasons for his results, just saying statistically they were his worst years / seasons. It doesn't need a rebuttal unless you think the raw stats are wrong?

Just discussing Lewis Hamilton in the thread called 'Lewis Hamilton'. smile
