Is this the sign of a guy who never reached his potential in F1 (I say this as someone who was at LM in 2015)?

Or is he showing up a lack of talent on the current grid?

Either way, third place is deeply impressive. Always had a soft spot for the guy.

ETA - Goddamnit. Typo in the title.

It would be a real fairytale story if he could get on the podium tomorrow. I’m really routing for him. I’m almost scared to Get my hopes up.

Maybe he’s just showing up a lack of talent at FI?

Yes he's done well to match Stroll's best starting position of the year. I agree he probably has more to give with the right car and was unlucky to lose his Renault drive after only being a tenth-or-so slower than Ricciardo.

So happy for Hulkenberg. Great story him getting a second chance like this.

Would love to see him get a podium.

I think he's just showing how average force Indias drivers are. Perez is solid but unspectacular, Stroll is OK, just always thought he got thrust into F1 way too early as he wasn't a generational talent like Verstappen.

Whatever the inner team politics - this is the most important thing for the sport. This guy is owed a 'good day'. He's clearly a talent. Not the best of the best, but good enough to deserve a competitive car and a shot. Fingers crossed he manages to shine tomorrow, with or without the podium.

For Hulkenberg Wow, You can also interpret Stroll and Perez Hmmm.

None of them ever really look like canny race winners.

Perhaps why Seb has half a chance with TR.

Think some of the comments are a bit unfair on Perez. What's to say he wouldn't have put it on the second row?

Poor sod has missed two races in the most competitive car he's ever had.

I do agree Hulkenberg has likely got more outright speed but he's also been the most unlucky driver in F1 as far as never getting a result. Some say you make your own luck of course....

Knowing his luck, if he gets the podium then the other teams will protest Racing Point again and he'll be disqualified and lose it again.

Interesting comments from Ross Brawn, that Hulk was their second choice for Mercedes if they'd failed to sign Hamilton.

I saw a tweet from Chris Harris suggesting Hulkenbergs last pit stop 'smelled a bit whiffy'.

Point being it was to drop him behind Stroll rather than legitimate need I presume.

Anyone shed any light on this? Wouldn't surprise me but I'm obviously not privy to the state of his tires at that stage in the race.

Either he way he drove a good race. Reckon Ferrari should swap him for Seb.

Racing Point quickly said after the race that Hulkenberg had been struggling with a vibration on his tyres towards the end of the third stint, leaving it with no choice but to bring him in again.

Hulkenberg doubted his tyres would have made it to the end of the race due to the issue.

"We were kind of forced to pit off the prime set," Hulkenberg explained on Sky Sports F1 after the race.

"I think we got a couple of nice big blisters on both rear tyres. The vibration just gets so quickly out of hand that within two, three laps, it just skyrocketed.

"I don't think the tyre would have survived to the end. It was a pity. First half of the race was very under control, very managed.

"The second I got onto the second prime set, that just felt like a different set of tyres, a different compound, and it just didn't work in the end."

I thought the same, he also was the only runner to run the red marked tyre in the race scratchchin

He might have needed to stop, but putting him on softs made no sense.
I wasn't following the tyre allocation/usage, but maybe it was the only new set of tyres he had left by that point. Either way, it was only a short stint needed at the end of the race, and the specific compound didn't hurt him more or less than any other by then. It was just a set of tyres to get him to the end.

And yet they managed the last eight laps of the race. He wasn't trying to push qually pace in the race, he was just nursing them to the end, and if they were all he had available at that point then they did the job he needed of them. He didn't lose anything on track because of it.
