Yeah just watched the TNB on youtube as it was too soon yesterday to recap what you already knew.
Considering he has a 'notebook' he gets a lot wrong.
After a while you realize you only watch it to see the roving camera. Most of his interaction just cause confusion in the person receiving it.
Dont know what else they can do as they would just have someone wih more annoying characteristics like some of the plonkers we see on the grid now. So I guess its a job for life. Maybe they should call the show Lucky Ted.

It's not Red Bull that's toxic. There's a certain section of fans (including some Red Bull fans) that are toxic.
Horner, Marko, and Jos are pretty much the definition of toxic, I reckon.
One does actually sometimes feel quite sorry for MV, given his three main influencers.

That said, his driving this year has improved considerably compared to years past; maybe after eight seasons, and with a very competitive car, he’s finally growing up on the track.
Agreed, he's been much better this season. He's not had to deal with Lewis Hamilton though.

Well, this aged badly!
Last comment was prophetic though.

There I am slating Croft and then he gets all incredibly technical with jargon I just don’t understand.

Driver pulls off a move on fresher tyres and we get……. ‘that’s no problem for him, his tyres are stickier than a stick’. (Little satisfied chuckle to himself)

I feel like a novice F1 fan now, I just don’t understand this technical stuff.
I think he was trying to do a Blackadder quote, but stuffed it up. "His tyres are stickier than Sticky the stick insect after getting stuck to a sticky bun".

But yeah he is an absolutely f*cking dreadful end-of-the-pier figure who should be pushed into the sea.

Something for home or work to constantly trigger annoyance at ‘Crofty’.

I find Crofty to be a mildly irritating dick most of the time but Jesus wept, yesterday he was unbearable. I watched the highlights on Sky Showcase as they were on 55 minutes before C4 and I honestly wish I’d waited.

To me “wheel to wheel racing” involves cars going at it for a few laps (or at least a few corners) in a row, ducking, diving and, you know, being wheel to wheel. Yet every piece of piss DRS overtake into T1 yesterday was “And X goes wheel to wheel with Y and makes it stick!!!!” At a billion dB.

Cretinous stbuiscuit.

I've mentioned this before but...F1 TV. Easy (and cheap) via VPN and officially signing up via the App.

Considering it's an 'official' commentary it really is excellent and they don't pull any punches. Laid into the FIA, race control (and Max!) yesterday with no hesitation when they felt justified in doing so, so I have no concerns that they're pushed to follow official lines or to not paint their ultimate paymasters in a bad light.

However my favourite thing is that they don't treat viewers like idiots, there was no building false anticipation for the last 10 laps with Hamilton behind Russell, no dramatic raising of volume for every overtake or the chequered flag etc.
I might look into this.

Probably not as a Sky cost saving exercise though by the time you’ve paid for VPN each month and the F1 TV.

Though, they’ll be no ability to record.

I started watching the race on record yesterday about 30mins behind the actual start time (handy for SC periods). I guess with F1TV I’d have to wait for a full rerun of I wanted to watch the whole race?

Nope.

You can dip into the stream once it's started. It will pop up "Watch live or watch from start".

F1TV pro is costing me £6 per month. VPN has been paid over a 2 year period which worked out best. Definitely cheaper what I was paying for Sky basic and a sports package that they make you sign up for unless you were lucky to get a deal.

I don't miss the recording function because its always available to watch anywhere I have internet access and a smart phone or TV with internet access.

IMO, there's never been a good F1 commentator and I include Murray 'if I'm not mistaken and I surely am' Walker.

And you lot know the answer why. Talking coherently for two hours about F1 is beyond any individual's abilities. It's just too complex.

When Croft goes and after the first race of the next season someone on here will start a new thread about how the new person is rubbish and should go.

Pile on ad infinitum.

I disagree.

the commentator used to be simply a voice to add detail to the footage, you can see most of what is going on, so there is no need to talk endlessly.

I know Murray was guilty of this, but he had a foil, a foil he did not like for all sorts of reasons, but a stroke of cleverness from the BBC giving them one mic and two utterly different people.

A good commentator adds to the experience, gives you background knowledge, maybe makes you laugh. there are not many.

croft makes you cringe, makes his workmates cringe, and thinks he is something special because the cretins at SKY probably tell him so. He adds very little to the experience, shouts too much, never knows when to shut up, adds in utterly pointless stats just so that he can say something when nothing is fine.

Modern sports comms in many sports have become about shouting, trying to convey excitement, that is not your job as a commentator, your job is to remain fairly calm and inform the viewer about detail, not what is obvious on screen

The zenith of F1 commentary teams occurred in 2011, and only for that one year, when we had Brundle and Couthard together in the BBC commentary. Neither was a lead commentator; they were just a couple of experts, and friends, talking about F1 together. Couthard had only recently retired from driving at that point, so his knowledge was bang up to date, and Brundle hadn't yet become the weary old man he often appears as now.

They failed to properly convey the excitement of F1.

Proof of the pudding is that the combo didn't last.

It didn’t last because Brundle was made an offer he couldn’t refuse from Sky.

I agree that Brundle and Coulthard were a good team in the com box.

The better commentators for me are Dave Addison, sadly paired with an ought to be retired John Watson in SRO stuff.

Martin Haven is excellent, funny and informative in WEC.

John Hindhaugh, can be a little over opinionated and commercial at times, but I can listen to him happily for hours with Jeremy Shaw in IMSA.

the ones with the big gigs, sadly are not great, Croft, Gavin (as it stands) Emmet in MotoGP, the shouty Aussie who does INdycar,

what the god guys do is be there without being OTT., shouty and making inane jokes and comments.

Croft is not the worst, Carlton Kirby is that, by a long way the worst commentator on sport I have ever heard, yet somehow managed to find work for decades, probably because he speaks numerous languages.

the question has to be, if this talking stops you from acwthing, in MotoGP, F1 and a few other sports yes it does, and that is not good.

Really really really really don't like Couthard as a commentator. His voice is so droney and his 'insights' are a bit boring. Dare I say it, I would prefer Croft to Coulthard (but that's because I have learnt to zone him out).
