One of the reasons James and Murray worked was because they shared one microphone.

When Murray was losing his mind and spouting ste, which he was prone to, James would grab the microphone and tell us how ste one of the drivers were.

Now imagine if Martin and Croft had only one microphone, the amount of ste spouting would at least half.
Martin would lamp him...

I'm surprised he hasn't already.

Arguably Murray is to blame for modern F1 commentary. If somebody watched his highlights and heard Murray's raised pitched voice they would think F1 is constantly entertaining. It's not. The fake excitement is so that it can used for the highlight reels. A case in point on another forum Alex Jacques was criticised for over embellishing when announcing George Russell as the race winner yesterday.
Not sure blaming the genuine article for the way the fakes behave works for me...
They all put on a nasal satellite link voice even though we have clearer sound now. What a bunch of idiots lol.

Murray would shout with excitement with a nasal pitch which defined his pants-on-fire commentary, Ben Edwards sounds like he's drowning and gasping for air, Alex Jacques sounds like he should doing voice-overs on a gameshow, Crofty sounds obnoxious. YMMV

May be because that was when I was first getting into F1 properly, but Murray and James were peak commentary team for me. Martin and Croft with one mic doesn't bare thinking about. I suspect the mic would end up being inserted somewhere it shouldn't be.

Worth remembering they didn't like each other to begin with. Murray thought Hunt was a privileged Hoo-ray Henry, Hunt would turn up unprepared with bottle in hand and nick Murray's notes. I think one time they almost came to blows having to share the microphone.

Hunt didn't give a fk, which made for some classic comments.

F1 Kayalami 1983 . The dynamic duo in low bandwidth satellite feed glory. I wonder how much insight they have rewarded the viewer with?
Im not watching it again but others can, to hear not much beyond who's in the tv picture. Funny enough F1 was easy to follow back then.

I am convinced Crofty has a contract which is "pay per word" as he NEVER EVER shuts up for 1 second. Has he perfected breathing through his backside as he never seems to take a breath from his ongoing banal stats and shouty commentary.

For some reason ESPn only showed FP1 and sprint qualy, then the switched to US soccer so had to watch F1TV highlights, AJ was screaming louder than Croft, DC's continuous pops at Mercedes, Mercedes power this and Mercedes power that, it's so obvious who is still paying him.

I’m wondering if someone has had a word. Listening to the F1 on record and he’s less shrieky and shrill, and far more conversational.

Or maybe Ant has told him to follow his lead and be far calmer. Like someone who knows what they are talking about.

My brother called me during the race, (I was watching on F1 TV) and I could hear Croft screaming in the background.

He wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but was more tolerable I think. Maybe someone took his sweeties away…. <coughs>

He just can't help himself with the "old switcheroo" can he. He tried to avoid it with "switching positions" etc BUT it just had to creep in eventually!! He was still screaming at the end despite the gap from 1st to 2nd being far too great for anything meaningful happening.

But Ant did call him on it. I would love to hear Ant and MB do commentary.

On his run down of the grid positions, delivered in an hysterical shouty voice, apparently every time a car has started a Grand Prix this year from P4 has gone on to win.

So that’s one race then you brain donor.
