I noticed at the end of latest f1 race the banner over the finish line read world record , since then all news reports i have seen refer to it as a new record , so which is it ? To my mind its a new record not a world record , the mrs worries about my way of thinking and thinks i have a bizarre logic which could be true .

It's simply a record - and one which stands up for itself without the need for silly aggrandisement.

A world record is typically something which , in theory ( if not ability ) is open to anybody, anywhere to strive towards , and not relating to a tightly regulated sport . Fastest mile, highest jump , biggest pork pie - that sort of thing .

Calling Lewis' record a world record is as daft as saying that AJ Foyt holds the world record for winning the Indy 500. It is only a nuance of meaning - but it still clunks when you hear it

I thought calling it a ‘world record’ was odd also.

More of a World Record then the NFL champions being 'world champions' or baseballs World Series so imho I'm happy for F1 to claim world record for F1 wins as a truly global race series...

As it's the 'F1 world Championship' then surely it is a world record?

Exactly my thought, F1 is open to any driver good enough and travels around the world as a world championship/series. The record is then world wide same way as the drivers champion is a world champion.

In contrast the NFL or NBL are not open to teams outside of the USA and therefore should not be called world champions.

It's just a record. The worldliness or otherwise of F1 is irrelevant.

By that logic is there no such thing at all as a "world" record? Usain Bolt has run the 100m in 9.58s, but the "internationalness" or otherwise of athletics would also be irrelevant, so that's also just a record?

Traditionally if you do something 'more' than anyone else in a specific sphere you have the record scoped to that sphere. If you do 'more' at a specific circuit and you get a circuit record. Do 'more' than anyone else in a country and you get a national record. Do 'more' in a racing series and you get a series record. Do 'more' than anyone else in a specific formula and you get a world record (be that "Most wins in a F1 car" or "Most wins in a Bambino kart").
