Whilst I'd love to see a closer battle, I also really like seeing Horners face when Mercedes beat Redbull like a ginger step child.

Conflciting times! hehe
The look on his face if Mercedes qualify on the front row, is going to be priceless!

For what it’s worth this far out, the weather forecast is sunny and not much wind.

HAMVER refuse to cooperate over that specific piece of track that they both believe they have dibs on. Both off on a sulk.

RIC thinks he's worked out the McLaren brakes, but hasn't. Ploughs into the back of PER. RIC shrugs, smiles, PER doesn't.

BOT can't get to grips with the unstable rear, slips into rally mode which is very entertaining but very slow, destroys the tyres and gets passed by almost everyone.

NOR can't believe his luck, until it runs out. The new Mercedes engine installation isn't right and he retires in a cloud of smoke.

GAS has a great race, but no-one has told TSU that he's a rookie number two who romps off and wins.

No?

Ok VER wins from pole.

If only.

It's been a long time. Last year they were great but I do wonder if the Merc engine will suit the car. No way of knowing until the race I know, but I'm a bit nervous. I've been a long-term supporter, and drink in their pre-season fluff. I've been disappointed many times, but still hope.

My two thoughts are:
1. What lap will Verstappen crash out after failing to execute another wildly optimistic overtake?
2. Will Aston Martin actually finish the race before pitting the car to repaint it a colour that actually looks like green on the telly?
I don't think Max has put a foot wrong recently, last year he was outstanding, but he still has this reputation.
If you look through the races he hit more cars than you’d want to though. Lots didn’t end in him retiring but he still hit a fair few.
He does. Lots of the other drivers give him a wide birth because of it.

I've said this on here a few times. As good a racer as Max is. It has yet to be seen how he performs under real pressure, when a championship is on the line. Balls out taking risks to win a race is great when it doesn't matter if you bin it. But its completely different when every point counts.

The Redbull garage will be a pressure cooker environment if they have a sniff of either championship. I'm not sure Max and his dad will be able to cope.

I hope we get to see what he's made of and they push Mercedes all the way.
He is a once in a generation talent, just overshadowed by Mercedes dominance. He’ll be absolutely fine if the car is good enough.
I'd argue the Mercedes dominance has actually helped highlight Verstappen's once in a generation talent, rather than overshadow it.

Max is the only guy to consistently split the Mercedes, and occasionally beat both. That proves he is an exceptional talent and he has shown the world that he is the only driver capable of taking it to the most dominant team in history despite inferior Red Bull kit up until now.

He has won 10 Grand Prix despite Mercedes constant advantage. Granted, his first win came thanks to Merc imploding in Spain '16 but the point still stands.

The comments about not handling pressure make no sense to me. He has carried Red Bull hopes in the WCC for the past few seasons and picked up the slack from his under-performing teammates. Red Bull hopes sit squarely on his shoulders. You don't last very long in the Red Bull camp unless you can handle that pressure, let alone have them build the team around you.

When Max has a car capable of challenging for the title, he will be right there.

He has the best chance of having this, in what has been a remarkable career already.

However, Perez is possibly the key here. Not as many might think in taking points away from rivals, although Helmut & Christian will hope for this.

The best hope for Max is that Red Bull listen to Perez and use him to develop the car. His experience could be the key to giving Max the car he needs. Astonishing natural talent does not lead to a miraculous ability to lead the development of a car. Experience and skill does that. Red Bull hopefully have finally realised that having someone with even less experience than Max in the second seat is a complete waste of resources.

Engineers develop the cars, drivers help fine tune the potential best balance from the package, that balance is a narrow window.
The days of the driver making a difference on car peak potential are long gone, yet this keeps being dragged up.

I agree, to a point.

I think you are spot on regarding Perez enabling Red Bull to cause Mercedes problems on Sundays. More so than they ever managed to do so with Gasly or Albon in the second car. Perez should score heavily and regularly, much like Bottas does for Merc. It could well bring them into play in the WCC.

I am less convinced by the car set up contribution. Perez has 5 more years experience of F1 overall than Max, but I am not sure how much that matters given the significant change in regulations over that time. Max has exactly the same amount of experience as Perez does when it comes to driving the post 2017 era of F1 cars.

I think that the Perez arrival might well allow Red Bull to provide a more balanced Red Bull to help both drivers score heavily (and get away from the tricky car, that only Max seemed to be able to drive), but I would be surprised if Perez knows what Max needs behind the wheel more than Max does himself.

Well I've done the second of these, and would join a league for the first if there was one.

and even if he did, I doubt he'd be inclined to share the secret other than as a by-product of helping himself. I really don't think he feels that he's there to help Max to a WDC if he can grab some glory for himself. A quicker car helps them both, but that's as far as it goes.

Max may have been the only driver to consistently split the Mercs. But that is all he has been excpected to do. Redbull have had no real hope of winning either championship so haven't been under that pressure. They have been racing to win the odd race when it suits their car or Mercedes cock up.

This is why I think it will be interesting to see how Max and Redbull handle that pressure if it comes to it. With the added spice of Perez thrown into the mix. Will he be allowed to race Max?

Can they cope with needing maximise points over a season rather than just racing to pick up a few wins?
