So..

It's still Merc for tomorrow I think!

That said, Max is really showing his talent this season. The car still looks a little tricky and it's so impressive to see him hustle it the way he can in quali.

Fingers crossed for rain to finally add some excitement to this miserable venue.

Max has always been talented. I don't think anyone, other than the most blinkered partisan, can deny that. However, he has always been sloppy and made too many mistakes. Too impetuous and hot-headed.

I've been saying this for years, but when he finally gets his head together and learns to be circumspect, and to see the long game, and to be more tactical, he is going to be incredible. Maybe it is finally happening.

This is the first year he's had a proper championship contending car, though. So it's the first time we're truly seeing how he copes with pressure.

I questioned yesterday if Mercedes doing a chassis swap was a lose lose. If Hamilton had a bad day today then it's a real lose, or like has happened, Hamilton has no issue with the chassis and is still quicker than Bottas and Bottas now has the rest of his confidence completely crushed for the rest of the season.
Can a chassis really make a performance difference? a chassis is just a tube and that tube is built to the exact same specs all year I guess. the important bits are what is going around it.

jsf, what do you think?
I believe I heard it said today that all the chassis are carryovers from last season. That means they've had a lot of fatigue cycles through them; it is not at all impossible for sub-surface (micro)cracking / delamination to be present, resulting in (non-uniform) changes in stiffness. I'm sure Mercedes carry out a *lot* of non-destructive testing, but even so.

Let’s hope so. We’ve had 36 great races since the 2019 Paul Ricard borefest.

Maybe they’ll just throw a random “Competition Caution” safety car five laps from the end?

No, I think this is the first time we're seeing him start to cope with pressure. Usually he punts himself (and others) off the track as he fails.

Yep.
Good job he started young though, because it has already been a lot of years before maturity has started to creep in wink

I totally agree; it has taken him WAY too long. yes

Few F1 drivers get given the length of opportunity that Max has been given. It's only his youth and obvious amazing raw talent that has kept him in the game this long.

I think it only looks that way because he's had to go through that learning and maturing process in the spotlight of F1. He only had one year of junior single seaters before F1. Hamilton had five years in the junior ranks before F1, and won his first title aged 23. Max is just 23 now, so although it feels like he's been around a long time already, he's really only just at the same stage where Lewis first came in and started to win.

Maybe, maybe not. I'm certainly not wanting to argue.

But, for sure, it's about bloody time that Max started to realise his potential. yes

If it is thunderstorms tomorrow I wonder if the low downforce wing on the bulls will hurt them?

I don’t know that we’ve seen enough to rule out a chassis concern for Lewis yet. Yes he managed some better laps in the later stages of Quali. But who knows if he would have bettered Max with his previous chassis ? I think it’s honestly too soon to say. Maybe we’ll see high tyre wear as a result of having to push harder ? Too soon to say for me.

Great weekend by Max so far. He and the RedBull look mighty again. He’s got to be considered to be in the favourite car and favourite for the title now?

In the era i work in mainly you can get significant differences in chassis, these days they are so well built and so well tested it's far less likely. You can still get chassis failures where a pickup point is cracked or flexing, but that will be picked up on a rig test post event.

I've bolted chassis to walls and floors in the past and loaded them up, it can be highly amusing to see the flex. Back in my very early days of racing in the early 90's, i lifted one chassis up and saw the steering column move. laugh That was a spaceframe and the designer properly screwed up.

Well tomorrow is going to be interesting at least. Well, the start, if nothing else. I guess we can all join Lando in praying for rain!

Amazing to see how much improvement the Mercs had and I believe Lewis had a huge set up change?!?!

Also astonishing the mechanical grip on the bulls to take off wing and still corner faster than the Mercs...

Perez is pretty much showing his quality isn't he?

It’s about time Red Bull have given him a car that can realise his potential. And in it, he’s leading the world drivers championship against the most successful F1 driver of all time.

He's still got a long way to go.

The thing that has been holding Max back the most so far has has been himself.

But, yes, for sure bring it on. I welcome it.

Although I do rather want to see the most successful F1 driver in history, who also happens to be British and black (or, at least non-white), go all the way into the history books. And without being an utter Dick Dastardly cad like Schumacher was.

Anyway, this beer is really nice. What were we saying?
