That question isn’t meant to trivialise his amazing comeback from his racing accident and I’m sure that his injuries are an ongoing daily problem. His subsequent F3 victory at Pau was amazing but I’m wondering if he’s doing any racing these days? He’d be very popular at Goodwood.

I don’t know the answer, but I do hope he is still able to race.
I’ve also followed his story and, like Zanardi, huge respect for him.

Think it’s good that he is in the public eye, as a commentator and pundit, as he sets a great example of someone overcoming adversity.

Presumably any race car needs to be adapted somewhat, so that may be a limiting factor.

I may get flamed for this ....

I like him as a presenter and I think he could make a successful career from it but in my view it is time to lose the shorts. The completeness of his rehab is that he is outwardly just the same as everyone else - we know and respect what he has achieved.

He really should still be racing, he was fast and consistent, WEC or GT would be ideal but maybe there are issues setting a double driver car up for hand controls etc?

Many amputees wear shorts all year simply because it’s comfier and they are easy to wear over prosthetics than trousers.

He was at Goodwood a few years back, drove his F3 IIRC

I'm guessing you aren't an amputee.

Trousers are a total to wear, maybe it's time to lose the ignorance of the subject matter you have?

Nope and I don't doubt your feedback

Unfortunately ignorant people like me just see a schoolboy and it is not a look to be taken seriously.

Yes, he fully deserves to still be behind the wheel of a competitive race car.

As the OP mentions his F3 win at Pau in 2019 was monumental and it didn’t really get the recognition it deserved. OK the win was largely down to tyre choice but it was his decision to go to wets that day -
every other driver on the grid was free to make the same choice.

The shorts debate is trite and irrelevant.

He's an amputee, not Angus Young.

My mate came back from Afghan half the man he was. He always wears shorts. We reckon he looks like a postman.

My 1st thought to this was "why ? it aint like his legs are gonna get cold"

then I remembered I was on PH and somebody would probably take offence, joking aside massive respect for the lad and I wish him well for the future.

Rather than start throwing insults around, why don't you educate him? Otherwise you are the bellend here.

I’ve worn shorts for work on a regular basis over the last ten years. Office based work mainly. What I wear has no bearing on the quality of work I do, nor on how well my opinions are respected.

Judging a person you don’t know based entirely on what they’re wearing is not only a very ugly trait it’s also likely you’ll be wrong more than right.

Whatever Billy monger wears his opinions are worth listening to and what he’s achieved since his life changing accident is more than many will ever manage regardless of their tailoring.

I believe he has different prosthetics to allow him to do different activities and for comfort.

Long ones, short ones, running blades etc.

No doubt shorts make his life much easier when managing his disability.

There are plenty of videos online that you can use to make yourself less ignorant.

Well this thread took a fast left turn towards stupid content

Billy is a great presenter I think, very confident on camera and a depth of knowledge to more than equal his colleagues

Does not seem to have competed since 2019, maybe the TV career is more lucrative.

There's certainly been mainly limb limited driver line-up race at Le Mans - https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/24-hours-of-le-... Looks like they finished the race, coming in 32nd overall/effectively 18th in class¹. That's from what looks like a starting grid of 71 cars and in a class of 25 cars.

¹ Technically they were the "Garage 56" entry so running in their own exhibition class, but driving an LMP2 car to LMP2 regs. other than required modifications to suit driver disabilities.

I'm not an amputee, but your post prompted me to spend 3 seconds wondering what it would be like to wear a pair of trousers that are 2 feet longer than my legs.

I think the imagery or to the point the subconscious imagery is a not a unwelcome turn .
Bit like nose piercing , facial tattoos , daft hair dye and styles .Nobody’s challenging the work ethic of moral background which some on here were thus far quick to jump on the guy who said “ loose the shorts “ .
It just not only the shorts it’s the height of him stud in the semi circle with the other two .
Coultard isn’t a tall bloke either .
If you goody holier than thou guys ridiculing the “ loose the shorts “ suggestion think a blokes height does not matter see Tom Cruise recently. If you are correct ( remember he s made some pretty successful movies ) then why does he wear “heels “ or did he at the last TG premier?

It’s the subconscious the stuff through behaviour and upbringing, education etc that’s been hard wired in .Hard wired in it’s hard to untangle .Boys shouldn’t cry , man up etc .

So for me as a commentator rather than listen to his words , i am distracted by the prosthesis on display and secondly why they are too short .
I get balance , but surely it’s better for him to attempt to train with longer or even different feet attached, which not resemble shoes and be of course covered with …..trousers .
If his head / shoulders were about similar in the mix as the other two , and you never saw the prostheses one would LISTEN to his words imho rather than be distracted working out why , this that and the other as outlined above .

Move on from the disability “ look at me “ .

We've got one in the immediate family.

The cup in the prosthesis which fits over the stump is obviously larger and stands proud of the stump or the leg the prosthesis replaces. The liner which forms part of the prosthesis system is made of a high friction rubber material- That is one of the ways the prosthesis remains secure on the leg for hopefully hours at a time.

Even as a person with two legs it is not hard to imagine how a pair of trousers, tailored over hundreds of years up to the cut which is currently fashionable for the 99.something percent of people who have two legs, would interact with this larger and high-friction interruption in the leg.

Even if you are absolutely average in stature you have worn a pair of trousers which refuse to stay up or which ride up on you, bunching uncomfortably towards the crotch and swinging at the ankles.

...and if the prosthesis which you rely on entirely for your mobility becomes displaced over the course of the day, bringing the risk of debilitating blisters on the stump, or if one wishes to air the stump for comfort and to protect the skin- imagine how that process differs with trousers on compared to if shorts are worn.

An absolutely brilliant observation by Billy over the weekend that the drivers were double-pedaling through turn 9 to get the nose in. It may have been the coverage or the edit but this is not something that any of the other C4 team noticed or commented on.
