Is Lewis on the extreme setups on order from management as the team lead driver or is it something he is asking for himself, knowing the base car is a bit shonky, if the extreme setup works he is on for a win?

Lewis is more experienced working with these engineers, it would make sense if he took the more difficult or extreme change. They can both choose a different path after practice, based on testing results.

The level of wing they run will be a different compromise decision.

Well in the interview he said ‘maybe George could run some of the extreme set ups in future’. I understood that to mean Lewis was taking the greater share of the pain. Sounds like either a team directive or a mutual agreement.

Working in an engineering production environment on rapid prototyping (not car related), we hand off the really big problems we can't get to the bottom that require a lot of experimentation to resolve to the really experienced team(s). They have a level of communication from working together for so long and a collective depth of experience that means they usually work out the pros & cons of extreme experimentation quicker - i.e if there are any practical nuggets in there. I can't imagine this would be any different. F1 is after all an engineering driven environment.

Don't think it's been mentioned but there was an article on the F1 website regarding LeClerc's rear wing. It (apparently) wasn't a low drag one just because he was at the back, it was in fact their next upgraded rear wing, that traded a little bit of downforce for a more significant reduction in drag in order to compete better with the RB straight line speed.

They could only make one, and so it went on LeClerc's car. I wonder if they'd given the upgrade to Sainz, he'd have been in a better position to attack Verstappen... You've got to expect that even if LeClerc only had the 'old' wing that Sainz had, he'd likely still have made it to at least 5th...

..
That sounds a bit worrying given that the tyres went off so quickly?
