Watching F2 in 2017/2018 it was pretty obvious that LEC,RUS and NOR were bound for greater things in F1.

With respect the F2 graduates since then are not exactly showing WDC potential. I had high hopes for MSC after his traditional “settling in season” but with MAZ out and MAG in his reputation is showing signs of damage.

So we have Piastri (crazily) on the sidelines and none of this year’s F2 field are really shining. F2 is probably the only realistic feeder series into F1 so who and where are those future F1 stars ???

Piastri for sure. But unfortunately dawdling at the back in a Williams could be detrimental to his future. Had Russell not been on Toto's radar he could quite conceivably have been lost in the mix.

Apart from the drivers in F2, the most likely are Herta and Palou from Indycar. McLaren, Haas and Andretti all see the benefit of an American-known driver in F1.

That Piastri could win F2 as a rookie F3 champion, yet not get a seat this year at the top table, is a serious problem for F1 going forward.

That said, F1 in the next decade will be a great clash between Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell and Norris, whatever happens below.

As long as he comfortably beats Albon, I think he'll be OK. That wont necessarily be easy, though.

We're in a dry spell in terms of F2 talent to get excited about it seems.

On the flip side, we did get Russell, Leclerc and Lando fairly recently - not bad as a job lot of talent!

I'm sure by the time those three, and Max, have even started to peak, they'll be more talent moving up the ranks.

It's just a shame right now to not have anyone stellar to watch in F2.

Piastri yes, though he's very likely to find a seat for 2023 I'd say. De Vries and Vandoorne are 27 and 30 respectively, they don't belong in a conversation about stars of the futute!

Oh i suppose yeah just named them as outsiders that could still or would cut it imo.

Piestri is a year or two in the williams for Alonsos replacement.

If Dennis Hauger puts together a really good end of season he may be the best in there as he came up from f3 last year

Agree with you on that. I think Theo Pourchaire is the other viable candidate but whilst he can be brilliant on his day there is still an element of inconsistency.

I doubt whether there are too many F1 team managers glued to the pitwall studying the talent during F2 races these days. As mentioned above, and with the progress of F1 in the USA, they may have more interest in watching coverage of Indy Car….

With Max, Le Lercke, Russell, Lando, Piastri in F1, the future looks bright...unless Liberty screws it all up!!

Maybe one for the 2023 silly season thread.

As TheDeuce says, other than Piastri we're in a bit of a dry spell.

Piastri is the stand-out and he will be on the F1 grid next year.

It is not a great injustice that De Vries, Vandoorne and a great many other F2 competitors and graduates are not on the grid. Vandoorne had a fair crack at it and underperformed, De Vries is not really up there, useful to have him there in case Gasly makes the leap.

Zak Brown seems to have the hots for Colton Herta and Pato O'Ward but I suspect there's a lot of commercial impetus behind that.

There are been rumours of Antonio Giovanazzi and even Nico Hulkenberg coming back!

I really do not understand this Hulkenberg thing. He is a really good racer but achieved nothing in F1. Over 180 starts and not even a podium finish. He is much better suited to sports cars and other formulae as is shown by his results in them.

After De Vries performance at Le Mans, I would be quite keen on getting him in an F1 car and seeing what he can do.

Thoughts on Robert Schwartzmann? I did rate him in F3 but disappointed somewhat in F2. Finishing second to Piastri is no bad thing even if it was his second year but he had a habit of making it for himself in the races starting midpack.

It sounds strange but that German race that the Mercs went mental and everyone went off in the wet was the final straw. He was on for a 3rd and threw it off the track.

I think he's probably worthy of a shot, and Ferrari backed, but unfortunately Putin's war appears to have stalled his career.

That said, I note that his Wikipedia page now has him as Russo-Israeli dual nationality so maybe he can race under an Israeli flag? I did have a look to see if his Israeli nationality was a recent revelation but he spoke about it in a 2018 interview.

ETA: He's not going to be 'the next F1 superstar' though.

Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer, speaking today, seems pretty confident that Piastri will be a fully fledged F1 driver next year. Which effectively means a season at Williams in 2023 followed by a graduation to Alpine the following year.

Obviously there are rumours that his Williams F1 race debut may be slightly more imminent should Latifi continue to struggle so painfully….
