I’m trying to buy tickets for an event at silverstone this weekend, the Ferrari Challenge. I’ve been queuing for hours and still no sign of getting through this queue, so it looks like they’re losing out twice from me as they’re not selling tickets on the gate.

What a farce. I’m really disappointed in the greed on display, I hope this doesn’t set a precedent.

Copse is all sold. Hamilton straight is £669….. I’m struggling to understand how any sporting event can cost that much to attend.

It’s not a final or a one off event, World Cup final, ring side seats etc.

I’m bitter because it timed out this afternoon but the prices have gone up so much now it’s ridiculous. For a family of 4 you genuinely could go away for a 2 week holiday somewhere.

I’ve bought cars with less money

Oh Luke you turnip, of course Silverstone are the VENDOR - they are the seller, the provider of goods.
It pleases me greatly that you are displeased. If I thought for one minute that me not attending the GP would somehow enrich your life I’d crawl over broken glass to attend.
You really are a sad embittered non cheese eating soul.
Freedom for Tooting and all that.

Not really a comfort but apparently they checked the price every 90seconds and adjusted it or not accordingly.

Fascinating reading, and quite alarming that so many people are prepared to wait for hours to buy tickets for this. But then somehow Silverstone have managed to turn attending a sporting event into buying Glastonbury tickets, I find that utterly astonishing and rather worrying long term.

I have to applaud the track, they have made buying tickets for a venue that can probably hold close to quarter of a million people if they planned it better and didn't give a toss about you, into a bidding war somewhat akin to Ebay.

Their PR and marketing team are no doubt gong to get some good bonuses.

Just remember the precedent you are setting, YOU, the people are making this venue almost let YOU decide how much you are prepared to pay, THEY are the vendor, not you.

Pretty appalled by what Silverstone is doing. I'm not going to bother with this. If I am in the UK at GP time I will probably get a ticket on Facebook marketplace or Gumtree shortly before the event. I did that this year for quali and got a grandstand seat for a decent saving.

I'm disgusted by it. The website is still mega slow - nearly 24 hours later? 140k attendance means there can't be much more than about 50-60k transactions to process here. Scalable e-commerce platforms handle orders of magnitude greater than that. Even pistonheads could do a better job. You have work hard to be that bad. So I'm struggling to see past the assumption it must be a deliberate tactic deployed to create a sense of panic/FOMO so people overcome hesitation at the "surge" pricing and desperately buy.

The Mrs rang me yesterday about 2 and thought she was able to get our tix, in the basket but she had to go out soon, and they were £419 (up from £359) and not sure what to do. I told her not to bother; I can and will pay far more money for good times but it's supposed to be done with joy on your face, not stress and worry and resentment.

Well done Silverstone for making one of the highlights of our year into such a stand out example of desperate gouging.

Really going to try for Montreal I think; talking about Barcelona and/or Imola too. We're not rich but have high disposable income, this is not about the bottom line, it's about not being taken for a c!!!.

You can of hit the nail on the head there.

While non of us enjoy spending this amount of money we want to do it thinking of how great a time we will have.

Instead i did two days of trying to get tickets and eventually managing to at £50 per ticket more than they started out at as the website was slow so prices had time to go up.

I resented the process and instead of being sat here with a smile on my face as I’m going next year im still feeling extremely bitter about it all.

If it were for me I would not of bothered but it is a yearly thing that my Mum and myself do together. At the age of 76 and having gone through multiple cancer events the current one which will make her blind eventually in both eyes, I unfortunately do not have the option of going to Europe as it would be a huge undertaking.

Anyway, lets hope the race is good!

Where can I find broken glass, I would gladly pay over the odds to watch a turnip walk over it to get those so hard to purchase tickets, where do I sign, at least it would be more entertaining than the three most dreary racing series in the world droning past for 8 hours.

Seriously, what is your limit anyone, what price would make you say no?

is there even a limit, if they said 800 quid for 3 days would you still pay?

Ultimately I think they’re going to catch a cold on this.
It’s ok having a dynamic pricing model to encourage early ticket sales at the best price and to stimulate demand. However, you have to allow your customers a reasonable opportunity to take advantage of your opening prices. The move to this new ticketing provider who clearly could not cope with the volume of on line traffic and created a waiting time of 6 or more hours and an unstable link to the payment process is what caused the issue.
The circuit knew what the expected level of demand was as they themselves stated that 200,000 people had registered for the pre release notification e mail. Straight from the off the system could not cope and there were 25,000 people in the queue for tickets.
An earlier poster on this thread said he worked with these types of systems and that it’s not beyond the wit of man to build one that can cope with that level of traffic.
Unfortunately it smacks of the usual Silverstone malaise that “nearly good enough is good enough” and that it’s ok to cut corners and save a few quid here and there.
They’re now in a situation where they’ve put prices up across the board - the least expensive grandstand is now £400 for 3 days - but the early surge of demand will tail away and they are going to be left with a lot of unsold seats at very high prices.
I’d not be surprised to see them start discounting in the New Year to try and get bums on those seats.
In the meantime they’ve royally pi55ed off a lot of loyal customers who won’t forget this and will look to go elsewhere next year.

I'd strongly advise against doing Barcelona. The track is pants and the facilities/attitude leave a great deal to be desired.

Canada is next on my list.

I did Barcelona back in 2013, GA, and thought it was great! Good enough access around the circuit, great weather, beer, excellent party after qualifying. No complaints.

Beer is now banned at the circuit, and hired goons steal anything you wish to take with you on the gate. I last went in 2014, so things may have improved since then, but there were two cash machines to serve 120,000 people, and it was necessary to use cash everywhere. So an hour to queue for cash.

If you're using public transport, the circuit is rather a long way from anywhere. We used the metro, and a bus, and walked the last 25 minutes, an hour and a half commute each way. Our hotel was slightly on the wrong side of the city, however.

Oh, and Barcelona is the petty crime capital of Europe, so be very careful.

Glad it went better for you, Number2. smile

I hear good and I hear bad about it. I'm told a lot of hotels offer a direct shuttle bus to the circuit. No alcohol seems a little uncivilised.

Canada my concern is whether any covid travel/entry nonsense will happen between now and then.

Ah right, fair enough. I heard that beer was banned - even from circuit vendors? They were searching bags on the way in but we were travelling light with just our wallets.

We used public transport - metro and train - and there was a courtesy bus to and from the circuit at a certain point. We also chose to walk back which was enjoyable in the sun with a few beers inside us biggrin. I recall stopping at a restaurant on the way.

It's bringing back happy memories, hence my posting - I'm not denying other's experiences at other times differ.

It's amazing how copious beers, sunshine and cars can enhance an experience biggrin.

On Silverstone - yeah, what a load of bull. If spending money becomes difficult I don't bother, there's always something else.

I did Barcelona this year. Stayed on the coast in Badalona (at the recommendation of someone on here). Great place to stay with a small station that links to the mainline to Barcelona and the circuit.
Completely agree with the comments about the circuit being a 30 minute, uphill walk away from the station. Queues for trains on qualy and race day are immense and not marshalled. We ended up walking an additional hour to the next station along.
Yet more queues to get in and then out of the circuit as they insist on scanning your ticket on entry and exit. No alcohol allowed into the circuit but bottled water was fine. No beer sold by the vendors inside the circuit either. Food and drink wasn’t at Silverstone prices but the stalls were short staffed so again more long queues.
View of the track from the grandstands is excellent with commentary in Spanish and English , plus the weather was great.
Worth doing, but been there, done that now so looking to do Monza next year.

It would appear that Thursdays are no longer included and after waiting 11 hours in the queue and paying nearly a thousand pounds for 2 tickets, I now need to await exciting news coming soon about Thursdays track access?

Presumably another 11 hour queue and a few hundred quid more?

Quote:

Can I attend on the Thursday?
We'll be planning an exciting Thursday that'll kick off the weekend in style. Please note, this year Thursday entry will not automatically be available to weekend ticket holders.

Check back for more announcements soon.

I did Monza way back in 2003. Was living in France at the time. 1100 kms, through the night, in a Mk 1 MR2, after a full day's work. No sat nav. (or screen wash!). 50 hours drinking beer/espresso & watching loud cars….did the drive again in reverse. (Having avoided beer for a sufficient period, of course)
Then straight back to work.

It's amazing what you do when you're young.

If I recall correctly Thursday wasn’t included this year ie it wasn’t a separate ticket. They let you in if you had a weekend ticket. There wasn’t much going on with many of the stalls and outlets still being set up.
Was still worth wandering around though just to get a beer and a Cornish pasty.
