There has always been rubbish races...I can remember waaaay back winners winning be several minutes.

But yes, the first two have been dull. Not helped by ridiculous rules that nobody can understand or apply.

I have been spending too much time recently watching 1970's and 1980's F1 on youtube with the likes of Mansell battling his team mate Piquet as an example of the standard of the Sport at that time.
It's a fallacy to think that 70's/80's F1 was all action.

There were a lot of properly boring races, with high attrition, teams at the back who were way off the pace and dominant cars up front. Let's not forget the infamous 1988 McLarens which won every race apart from one.

This was interspersed with very memorable moments over the decade(s)

I will agree regarding 2023 to date - I recorded yesterday's race and skipped through 90% of it. If you're not a fan of the dominant team, it makes for a dull 2 hours.....

worth watching for Alonso, Leclerc and occasionally Max.

The simple answer is - do not watch - save your SKY F1 subscription.

2021 was an exceptionally close season - very few are like that.

Sadly, you have to vote with your feet, and at the moment as I am finding you are swimming against the tide, for some reason, I do not know, understand or even contemplate why, F1 is very popular.

I know what the supposed reasons are, but why that would convince you to shell out hundreds on season passes or subscriptions and then maybe thousands on tickets, I do not know or understand.

I can only satisfy myself that peopel are more easily pleased than I am, as let's be honest modern F1 cars look awful, sound awful, the drivers are petulant cretins, the team bosses are not much better, the teams spend insane, embarrassing amounts of money on petulant schoolboys yet we are supposed to be impressed, the events are often held in places that have questionable issues yet we are supposed to ignore it because the show is amazing apparently.

Really your only option is to switch off, the bubble will burst, it always does, but I do not think for a while. As this is now primarily an American sport and we all know how easily they are entertained sports wise.

They televised a race last year from The Festival of Speed.

Mainly E Type Jags and the odd Mustang. I was on the edge of my seat. The racing was so close and seeing the drivers battling and straining to keep the cars from spinning off the track.

Breathtaking stuff, yet my F1 loving friend had no interest and wandered off to make a cuppa.

But, she will avidly watch all the F1 practise sessions, qualifying and racing. Will waste whole weekends staying in to watch it.

To me, it's like watching someone else playing a video game.

I know they are going ridiculously fast and have super concentration as 0.001s lost on a corner can mean defeat but I personally find it sooo boring.

I had a go in a sim once and did one lap and was exhausted and turned down the chance of another go, I was soaked in sweat hehe

So I appreciate that Hamilton, Verstappen, Bottas and co are superhuman but.......

I’m 72 and more excited by F1 than for some years. We have stroppy Max demanding a perfect car to win races and not happy being 2nd despite carving his way through the field. He’s a real racer and despite not a fan I’m impressed with his attitude.
We have Alonso who is the oldest driver out there driving an Aston and getting podiums. There will be a win soon for him.
Russell is proving to be a good replacement for an aging Hamilton and just needs a more aero Merc.
Ferrari as always need to get their act together.
From the rest there will be some surprises.

You don't half come out with some tripe on here, but this is poor even for you.

Alonso for me is the surprise highlight of this season so far. Watching a 41 year old who first raced in 2001 (against Verstappen's and Mick Schumacher's dads!) still getting podiums is absolutely fantastic.

Other than that I think this is going to be the most boring season ever with Max having it all sewn up in record time.

For me it is very much a I will watch it if I am in the house, but I wouldn't change my plans to make sure I didn't miss a race.

That was my decision. It now only takes me 15 minutes to fast forward through recorded highlights on Ch 4.

Yesterday's so-called race was just another reason I'm glad I cancelled.

When a football team is losing at home by by a huge margin, you often see images of some fans leaving before the end of the final whistle. A lot is made of such.
But then you look closely and realise about 95% of people are just staying in their seats. They might bemoan the score, or the match. But they realise that, being a sport, there are good days and bad days. The 5% leaving make a big, public fuss about it.

This thread is the 5% making their big, public fuss.

For me, I'll watch the highlights just to keep abreast of what is going on. I'm not interested in watching live races any more. Even the 8 minute highlights on You Tube will suffice.

Thank you for your statement, but now how about having a stab at answering the actual question and telling me why?

So if only 5% of the people watching think it's a snore fest what is it the other 95% find so alluring? I'm at a loss to remember the 'Good days' you speak of....

I agree, if you couldn't find anything interesting in yesterday's race, you should stop watching, as you have no idea about F1. There was a heck of a lot happening throughout the field.

I suppose what you mean really is LH isn't winning.

And in to the 90s. Cars failing to prequalify. Oodles of pay drivers way out of their depth. Teams way out of their depth. Drivers separated by multiple laps at the end of the race.

Monaco 1996 had 3 finishes on the same lap as each other and only 6 classified (okay that wasn't a dull race)

Oh and in the 70s safety was woeful.

At the moment we had a top flight set of drivers - possibly the strongest, most competent field ever - even Stroll who is arguably a pay driver isn't too far off Alonso.

We need some design convergence but that takes time.

I gave up last year, after many decades watching F1.
One it became clear that Liberty wanted a motoring equivalent of the "word wrestling championship", that was enough for me.

Call me in 2025, if anything has changed.

Well I would say I am in that 5% camp and I have stopped watching after 2021. My son on the other hand, he is loving it more than ever. Liberty Media has taken the sport in a different direction. It may not be to your liking but majority of the younger generation is finding it more exciting.

This is a bit like complaining that Top Gear is no longer a car program but it is a family entertainment program. Business is business, it goes with the flow of popularity.

It's difficult to complain about the rule changes in F1. Back in the "good ol' days" there was constant breaking technology as new developments were discovered e.g. aerodynamics, downforce efficiency, engine performance and reliability.

Nowadays, with technology so advanced, safety becomes the most paramount issue. So you have to limit design language by constraining the dimensions, financial budgets, and engine performance. As a result there is less to differentiate and the focus is more on perfection and consistency to score more points.

Russel, great reply, add something huh Add something or ask a question, simply posting bhing is dull, pointless and adds zero. You might aswell have no posted anything.

f1 drivers are utterly petulant, have you heard the garbage they talk about, "oh he touched a white line, oh I could not take my line. Oh he moved over a little on the straight, he gave me no room.

Effing grow a pair and get on with in you utter nonces, it is about time this was all removed, real drivers race without damn radios and use their wits, experience and skill to plan moves, overtakes and pitstops.

And the less said about these so called team bosses the better, most of them simply seem to be guys that like being on the telly and use every example to try play a part that nobody really needs to see.

I ask you what you actually ENJOY about this sport. The racing is garbage, utter garbage,95& of passes are fake and manufactured the drivers are totally selfish and give literally nothing away to fans or the hanger on media, the teams go from being amazing to being tripe one season after the other with a few exceptions, the tracks are just twinkly lights and no challenge whatsoever.

I watched for a few laps yesterday and it was like watching an Esports race, every car looked the same, took the same lines, never moved, never did anything even slightly different, "Oh look sparks" Give me strength,

If you think this is great, I fear for you as if you watched anything truly decent you would probably explode.
