It would be quite amusing if/when that is confirmed given all the confidence earlier in the thread as proclaimed by some due to 'smirking' that Newey was heading to Ferrari.....
I don't think anyone argued that the 'smirking' gave them confidence (and, by the way, I think it was smiling personally but you can always make someone you dislike who is smiling sound bad by saying they are smirking).

I think people said the best evidence that Newey would go to Ferrari was the smiling/grinning of Hamilton.

Saying that something is the best piece of evidence available makes no judgement of the weight of a piece of evidence, nor how much confidence to place in it.

It's not a bad record considering the millions of rule changes in the 35 years he has been in F1...
It's a superb record, but he was not the designer of all those, he was an important team member of course.
You could also argue that the 2008 McLaren was largely his and he was even due some residual credit for the 2009 car.

Many people spend years in F1 or motorsport without a sniff of a championship win

How many championships you have to your name has a lot to do with the luck of being in the right place, at the right time and not what a super star people think they are

Been reasonably lucky but unlucky most of my time, don't mind as the many championship beatings and so almost nearly lost championships I've endured keeps me grounded

Newey without a shadow of doubt has helped create more luck than anyone else in F1 but with evey championship win he's taken more beatings of lost championships and needed the support of a lot of the right people around him

Not worked with him but have with many of the other successful F1 big names that are also good at creating their own luck.

They all bring that little extra needed to win, be it mindset, culture, approach, attitude towards people or clever thinking

Adrian Newey job titles since being in F1 since his first WCC.

1991–1996 Williams Chief Designer
1997–2005 McLaren Technical Director
2006–present Red Bull Technical Director

Without knowing the full organigram and structure of all the teams at that time I'm going to blindly say that they are probably the top 2 roles one can hold in terms of car design and development. Sure he'll have a team of engineers, but there still needs to be a leader for the design ethos and someone making the right decisions at the right time.

He could just have been smiling because he knew that his big rival was losing one of his main weapons, regardless of where Newey ends up.

Chapman, Barnard, Murray, Newey, Byrne, etc. I think, sadly, that the days of a single hand being largely responsible for a design or concept is over.

Can’t argue with the racing this year however with four teams at the sharp end.

Rules stability and limited room to innovate.

Oh.

This is an impressive record ,but what if his next team get the 10 year fallow spell of good results but not champions?

When you look at the number of WDC/WCC winning F1 cars not featuring Newey or Allison over the past 30 years you won't find many.

The only other person to have a hand in so many victories apart from Newey is of course Brawn. Not a designer per se, but possibly F1’s most successful engineer. Wolff owes much of his success to the work done by his predecessor.

Rory Byrne is a consultant to Ferrari and is still involved in designing F1 cars for a number of years.

I still think Lewis thought Newey was heading to Ferrari when he signed for them. His move to Ferrari is looking a backwards step at the moment I'd say.

You think Alonso will leave and miss out on the opportunity to drive a "GP2 engine" again?

I find it ironic that Adrian Newey's manager Eddie Jordan has made a deal to sign him to his former team Jordan GP Midland F1 Spyker F1 Force India Racing Point Aston Martin. biggrin

I wonder if some staff from Jordan are still around working for Aston Martin?

As posted in the 2025 silly season thread, Ferrari have made an announcement that don't include the words Adrian or Newey

I very much doubt anything AstonM achieve will be in the driving career window of either Alonso or Hamilton.
Maybe 3-4 years time they will have the best car and Max.

I shall be quite conflicted if he does go to AM because although seeing Horny and the Verstappens continue to implode and someone else overtake them will be sweet, for that person to potentially be Stroll would be horrifying.
The lesser of two evils though. Can we start a petition to keep Max out of AM ? It would be so much more entertaining smile

They had fewer than 20 total staff when they designed the first Jordan 191. Andy Green was one of the original designers then (in a team of only 3!) and is still with Aston Martin now, although I think he left for a few years inbetween before coming back to be technical director at Force India.
