Exactly - the FIA keeps wittering on about reducing costs, yet keeps messing with regulations requiring a very expensive new engine to be designed and developed every few years banghead
I wasn t a massive fan of the last spec, but the field converged.

Not sure why we couldn t have had those with sustainable fuel and the new aero.
Because sustainable fuel as a concept is dead in the water, that's why they never mention it anymore.

What we've ended up with is it's own disaster of course... But the fix will be more combustion power and less, but still significant electrical power.

I thought all teams had to run it for 2026?

They do, that plan was set in stone years ago and now they're all paid up and committed. It's just not the commercial win the sport hoped for and certainly no chance of them going full or heavily back to IC using e fuels as the justification to do so.

Mercedes customer teams had already been told it would be a different engine next year.

as different spec or just a normal revision for reliability etc? Either would be a new unit.

Finally seeing sense, F1 agrees the need to fast-track PU changes for 2027, aiming for a 60:40 power split between ICE and EV elements. This will be achieved by increasing fuel flow to allow up to 50kW extra combustion power, and cutting electrical power by 50kW. The details still need to be finalised and ratified by the World Motor Sport Council.

Probably good news for honda. Im sure they know just about enough about engines to eek out more power, though knowing them they took the rules literally and made something that hits the target in the document but explodes 1hp over it.

It has to happen they know they have screwed up.

Ironically just as the get the aero regs right allowing for close following of the car infront.

That's only because they are not near the limit of the tyres, the PU doesn't allow it.

A bit early for the V8 / V10... but stranger things happen.
(But I'm not complaining).

No doubt, but part of the changes they agree too will be budget cap increases to cover what they have to spend - that they obviously didn't expect...

“Second most capped”

I’ve followed F1 for a long time but can’t recall drivers being “capped” as an adjective

Ironically shown not wearing a cap in the main photo. He probably does have a lot of Ferrari caps though.

It doesn’t actually say for how long-when did his current contract run out anyway-I had in my head 2028 but was it this year?

They're being deliberately vague for some reason.

BBC report that this new extension runs to 2029, but The Race think his existing contract was up to 2029 and the extension takes it past 2030. He only signed his existing contract in 2024, so it would be unusual to extend it by so much if it wasn't close to running out already.

Imagine now many less question he will get asked over the next few years. Its like an extra 2 weeks holiday.
Noticable decrease in global warming as the AI wont be inventing stories on this issue.
Great move by Leclerc. Making more of a difference than hug a tree Vettel.
