My little group of three is having an informal meeting this weekend to see where we all are with our trip to the GP at Silverstone.

We won't decide just yet; we intend to make a decision a bit closer to the time. But at this point, I think we are all leaning towards cancelling, getting our £1k each back and doing something else, possibly the BRDC Classic event at the end of July. We could go to that and stay two nights at Escapade or the Hilton overlooking the circuit itself and still have change from what we have spent on the F1.
We are going to Spa this year. Only camping and general admission so not exactly breaking the bank, but we booked last year in the hope the new rules would shake things up.

I suppose we’re sort of right, and a couple of the lads we’re going with are casual fans anyway, but the new rules certainly haven’t made the prospect more enticing.

After miami my verdict is its still more entertaining to watch. I cant think of an F1 start as exciting as that one.
I think a lot of people are confused and think they are driving the car. Whatever max and co say it still looks good on the telly.
Only drawback with F1 is its too fast. You cant tell what happened till they do a slomo replay.
Goodwood members meeting was a good watch due to the cars being slow enough for the camera to follow and you could see the car on the edge of its limited performance.
People are really complaining that F1 is too fast but cant admit it.

That's not the issue at all, and anyway, the cars are 3 seconds or so slower than their lap times from last season.

The main problem is that they back off 200 metres before corners to charge their batteries.

I think this funky dancefloor filler would be a lovely backing soundtrack to your breakdown of everything F1 above...

And when Alonso can only manage to lap slower than a support race car, you know there’s an issue with this pinnacle of motorsport.

I have read and re read your post. I don’t understand your ‘too fast’ point. There is more action but the enjoyment of that action is negatively impacted by the various issues (that I don’t need to list).

I think I get what he's saying on the 'too fast bit'..... that the cars are so fast you're unable to witness the finite skill at play - but to be honest, it's been like that since at least the mid 70s.

There was indeed a time, as you see at Goodwood, where the cars were fast enough to be exciting but slow enough to be able to see the cars and the drivers working and on the edge....sliding, correcting, proper nose down braking, etc. But that was during a period in which races were being won with margins measured in minutes, not seconds.

Some years back, they tried ultra slow-mo TV cameras and I recall the most beautiful shot of a car going into a bend at near full chat. You could suddenly see both driver and car working at their limits. There's a photo of Rosberg that conveys the same:

There's no way you could witness that in real time on TV or by the circuit.

A good video showing how bad things are under these rules.

Leclerc vs Piastri, Miami.

https://x.com/f1bigdata/status/2052435545930785061

Leclerc makes a mistake on corner exit, gets crossed up avoiding the wall, Piastri takes advantage and overtakes, only for Leclerc to be back ahead by the end of the straight as Piastri slows down.

In a normal season that would indicate a mechanical problem or a driver with short legs... biggrin

Although I guess Liberty are relying on the 2F2F, D2S audience all expecting "that extra inch of throttle pedal travel" - available to the knowledgable racer, when needed. Wow! Great driver!! rolleyes

Edit: if only there was a way to capture the battling drivers staring at each other! laugh

When that was shown during the race (it was a replay, the whole thing wasn't caught live) I thought Piastri's car had suffered a massive issue. The speed difference as Leclerc passed was huge.

So the new plan is to increase IC power and decrease electrical dependency by around 50kw (70bhp)

But it's just an idea they're mooting, no explanation as to how the teams are expected to increase IC power or package the extra fuel required.

This is going to be messy as these cars are not designed to have the headroom for such changes, especially not at short notice.

That's now official. I hope they have spoken to all teams to work out the most they could increase the fuel tank size by for those teams that do not want to change chassis for next year, or allowing them to change the chassis outside of the budget cap if the FIA are forcing the change.
