Don't forget the sport has stopped killing much of its prime talent too, so there's less turnover than there was.

<clip> (Anthony Hamilton) had no problem funding the addition of a garage when he wanted more space...
Sorry, I really not picking on you but that comment is one of the funniest things I've read. He could afford to build a garage so he must be very rich! biglaugh

I know you've not been on Pistonheads long but you should scroll through some of the threads on here about garages people have built. There's some crackers and it's not the preserve of billionaires you know.

Ferrari probably calculated how much more merchandise they would sell, and more sponsorship they would attract before giving Hamilton a seat? No one rides for free. I wonder if they have Verstappen in their sights now.

How much do you think a senior IT Manager gets paid! rofl
A hell of a lot more than the average salary. I was an IT manager during the same period as Antony.

No-one is saying that the Hamilton's were multi-millionaires but the whole "poor boy from a council estate made good" trope is just not true. There is no way my father could have bought me a kart at six years old let alone run it and I never considered myself poor as a child.

It was a rhetorical question. Pistonheads is full of IT people so most of us know the available salary ranges for different IT and consulting roles. ...

And few of even the better paid individuals would consider themselves rich.

Lewis's dad had a well paid job, he was successful. Obviously Lewis was lucky that he had a Dad who could afford what I'm sure quickly became an expensive karting habit... But nobody back then would have considered them a rich family. Unless they have a very, very broad definition of what qualifies as 'rich'.

Maybe not rich, but certainly not poor either. It was enough to get him through several years of national level karting before McLaren started supporting him. That's not something that most low to average income families could contemplate.

It's also not just about the money, but having a parent with the belief and dedication to commit that much time, effort and money for their child.

Indeed, Lewis was lucky to have a well paid Dad and, also, a decent Dad.

There was clearly sacrifice made in several other parts of the family lifestyle in order fund Lewis's early career - that's why I resist the notion they were a rich family.

Conversely a rogue member of my extended family is behind on their child support payments yet is now sporting a fancy new tattoo! Which goes to show how selfish some people are even if they don't have a pot to piss in... So definitely credit to Anthony for being at very least as generous as he was successful at the time.

Yep. Totally agree.
Anthoney could have pulled the plug at any time, maybe Lewis had a run of bad races, missed a junior championship or anything.

Takes a lot of belief and sacrifice.

It says they remortgaged the house to pay for it.

The bloke probably made £1-300k a year which in the context of motorsport is peanuts. He isn’t from the slums but to do what he did was fairly against the odds.

Even for a top IT pm back then, pushing more than £500 as a day rate would have been highly unusual. Allowing for gaps between contracts it's unlikely he made more than £100k pa pre tax.

So definitely peanuts and the fact he set himself back financially to aid Lewis shows that it actually was a struggle. It also shows what a nice chap he was/is! As has his public behaviour ever after.

I think mine an Mrs Deuce's post tax income is around the modern equivalent of what he probably earned back then, we don't even have kids and we manage to still run short sometimes. We do live a lovely life and live in an expensive tourist town... But there's no way we could do what Anthony did without compromising everything else we currently find quite easy.

Motorsport is expensive, very expensive, not like say football, where a ball and boots are hundreds, even to be noticed takes alot of money, i know many very good racers who didnt make it due to money, its a shame but it is what it is.
Most pro drivers make a good living, the top stars make a great one, but without the support from the ground up its not going to happen.
Re Lewis and his dad, yes he had some money, but not enough to make it easy, and he had a dad who did everything he could to make it work. he was spotted early, and thank god he did or history might be very different.

I think Anthony is one of the finest examples of a father I have ever seen...

...and seeing where Lewis is now must be a comfort to his wonderful nuturing nature.

The question I have, is will Lando Norris continue to pay Mclaren? Clearly without his money they are nowhere, we can all see that this year.

I posted that it had cost his dad $40m for his sons Mcl package, I would expect Oscar to have contributed a similar amount.

That pays for the engine, tyres, engineers throughout the year. Mclaren were broke, having to sell off the MTC to raise funds before LH arrives with his rich dad.

ATM, they don't have the knowledge of how to deploy and use the electrical system. Mercedes have this and not shared this, hence the disadvantage So they need to hire engineers in that department. That's a cost they clearly don't want to make, so will Lando get his own?

What are you talking about? Lando and Oscar don't pay to drive for McLaren. They are both paid tens of millions to do the job. The $40m you are talking about was long before he was an F1 race driver, to get him experience in the sim and testing real cars as a junior driver. He will have long since made that $40m back, and then some, from being a successful racing driver.

Next you'll be saying that Lewis was only taken on by Ferrari so they could sell more branded merchandise.

If you think Ferrari are paying Hamilton directly out of their own cash reserves, you're deluded.

Is any of this serious or is it all tongue in cheek/ironic humour confused

lol, I'm not sure what world you live in.

Ferrari + the greatest f1 driver is marketing dream. You didn't see the share price jump up? That's people buying stock because they know it will go up again.

If you think it's all about cars being driven quickly, you are sadly mistaken.

Nico Hulkenberg and Perez, you think Audi are paying them? No chance. They bring millions from sponsorship or daddy.

Sainz a world-class, race winner is he paying Williams, of course he his.

What about the junior Red Bull team, Liam?

Well, now we know what world you're living in, and it's not the one where Ferrari announced their record profits for the previous year on the same day as the Hamilton announcement. Only one of those two things would make the share price move.

I think he is trying to be funny.

Probably best to retain the day job though.
