As I understand it they're to ensure the airbag doesn't go off unexpectedly if it's not required - a facefull of airbag at 30mph mid air might well prove to be something of a distraction!
I think you are correct about the air bag. I remember an old 5th Gear/ Top gear or something where they were doing that drive into a pile of gravel at various speeds test to make sure it did not go off too easilyBalmoral Green said:
I know someone who treats his Elise like that, all the time. Amazingly, it has survived four years of it. Everything else he's had lasts only for a few months before it's terminally broked.
Isn't it dead now? After he jumped it and it landed on a rock or something.Jonathan Legard said:
This is my favourite. Volkswagens getting mercilessly beaten to crap.

Trawling Youtube? You could have just gone to the "Your favourite car advert" thread that's been running here recently. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fpi6-1K49iY
Reminds me of a LDV Sherpa van that was the pool car at one place I worked in the late 1990's. We used to have competitions to see who got get the most air time using a bit of adverse camber on a roundabout exit in Washington. Great fun until one of my colleagues managed to put one of the front suspension struts through the bonnet on landing, the management were'nt impressed.
There used to be a road near where I live that my mate and I would hit a yump at in his Hyundai Pony (we were students at the time). It used to really take off and it was soooo much fun. The Hyundai never missed a beat either. We tried it in his old chap's company Volvo once and it bounced all over the road when it landed. We thought we were going to die. Once it stopped and we came to a skidding halt, we turned round and did it again. I must do that again sometime soon.....

All good fun but where are the outtakes?
I had a front blowout in an Octavia runing over what looked like a fairly average UK pothole last month at Devon lane speeds!
Indeed - where is the bit where the coil packs fail and the car goes into limp home mode before the car even gets to the jump?I had a front blowout in an Octavia runing over what looked like a fairly average UK pothole last month at Devon lane speeds!
Got to say that the ABS system on the Beetle looks sub-optimal.
But all in all - that job looks like epic fun. I wonder if one of the perks is a weekly spell at the Chiropractor?
