No but ive driven a C63 saloon and a E90 M3............................C63 - sounds amazing, boring to drive. M3 - doesnt sound as good, but I would rather drive that..........and I know someone who has had both, and he says M3 is more exciting to drive.
confused No I agree with you about the saloons. But that's now what the thread is about.

Dont take it personally that I dont agree with you.............but look at past history.........has there ever been an AMG that has been a better 'all round' car than an M? Dont think so. Even those 3 t*ts on Top Gear said so!

"This knocks them into a cocked hat"...................anyone can put a big engine onto four wheels and make it move fast in a straight line (AMGs and drag racers). But the cherry on the top is making it go fast around corners and making it slightly more desirable and exciting (M3s).
So you've driven the new AMG coupe then, and disagree with the road tester above? I'd be interested to read your objective comparison of the two.
whilst i'm an M person through and through, i'll conceed AMG probably hasn't made a better drivers car equivalent to M (comparing like for like, i.e. small saloon vs small saloon, big saloon vs big saloon etc). but all round better car is down to personal preference. the C63 is just as good if not better at many things than the M3, but as soon as you want that truly spirited drive, the M3 shines through and through. it comes down to what you want to be honest. personally, the M3 for me. every time.

Again though, you're presumably talking about the saloon which is, by all accounts, significantly inferior to the coupe to drive.

ETA: I'm not saying that the BMW isn't better to drive. I'm just saying that assuming that the Merc will be worse without giving it a chance, seems silly. I look forward to reading head-to-head road tests. smile

The argument of AMG v M has certainly got closer over the years to a point now it is what the person want's out of a car making it better for them, it is not black and white.

The AMG has better engine and steering, the M3 better handling, both have good gearboxes now. Looks?

Like somebody mentioned above the C class Black Series could be mouthwatering (like the CLK black). Or not, the SLK Black was not so good apparently.

What cannot be denied is that there are not many people who doesn't think the 6.2l V8 NA AMG engine does not sound fabulous.

Hi Kambites,

I haven't driven either but my personal preference based on reading reviews from EVO, is that the M3 would be the car to purchase based on the driving credentials alone.

The C63 engine is epic and it sounds like real improvements have been made in the chassis and drivetrain departments. However....the looks aren't to my taste and I acutally prefer this car in saloon version.

I wont take it to heart if you disagree as you too are entitled to your opinion. I can see your point in the comparison with the saloon version given all the current revisions the C63 coupe has recieved!

Ooh, have Evo reviewed it? I haven't read that yet.

I don't have an opinion to disagree with, except that people should always give a new car a chance before writing it off.

But did say that it's not as sharp as the M3, fair enough.

Not having driven any versions of the C63 or the current M3 I'd still take the view that these cars are not direct competitors. I think the Merc's are designed to appeal to a broader market (being larger, bigger engines and possibly more refined) were track days are not even a blip on potential owners/owners criteria. So, if we remove very fast B road & tracking use from the requirements I'd presume the Merc is the machine to own. It would be my choice anyway especially that the next M3 is going to be turbo charged by all accounts, give me an N/A big V8 any day.

I don't think track days are a blip on the radar of 95% of M3 owners either. It may cope with track days, but it's hardly in its element.

Bear in mind that even most Elises never see a racing track in the hands of their original owner. You have to get down to Caterham type cars before it really becomes the norm.

Agree, also I get the feeling he'd much rather have the C63 saloon with the new gearbox.

Yes I agree but it doesn't change my point of view. Even in this artical here on PH, tracking is mentioned and I really don't understand way.

I am looking forward to the supposed 'Black Edition' of this car immensely.

I still really fancy a CLK 'Black', but I fear that they will remain out of my price range, what with so few being built.

I don't expect we will see a black version of this now the SLS is here which is a pity....the engine would have to swing it for me...the noise, the fact it is hardly breaking sweat producing 481bhp..masterpiece

Funny how these things always deteriorate into a "BMW is far better than Merc" or vice versa type argument. I feel well qualified to speak on this matter, owning a C63 estate and having extensively driven the E92 M3. Really it's horses for courses. Handling wise I can easily admit that the M3 is better. The problem is that the gap really isn't that big and as I may go onto a track maybe once a year, the other qualities of the C63 make it far superior FOR ME.

The engine is just EPIC. It makes me smile every time I fire the beast up on the way to work. When I want to cruise it is a much better car than the M3. People seem to think the C63 is a roly-poly pudding in the bends but that's just drivel. The M3 is sharper but not that much sharper!

Of course if you are after the ultimate in handling precision for the road the M3 may be better for you but if that's so imporatnt I would suggest that you would be better served with a Cayman.

When I'm told all round car I also take it to mean one I can take the family out in with a reasonable level of comfort and something in the boot. Do you? Or those tits?
