When I was a lad, a chap who lived a couple of miles from home had one of these :

Many was the day I'd ride around there on my bike and spend ages drooling over it.

Then he sold it and bought a black one like this :

The BBS one piece wheels were painted JPS gold and all the logos and stripes were in in gold too cloud9

Great looking cars, wouldn't touch one with a barge pole biggrin

Now THAT is a sports car!

One of Giugiaro's finest moments in my opinion.

Would that be similar to a 308 GTB/S QV? . . . . the European version of which had 240HP wink

To be honest, they are bloody awful to drive.

All turbo lag, farting wastegate and clonky gears.

They sound like an Escort and smell like a canoe.

But there is something special about them.

I have owned mine twice. In between stints in my Esprit, I owned a F328 GTS, which was a better car, but the Lotus has more character, is more eccentric and feels just as special.

Mine has covered 31,000 miles and on a good day might be worth £15,000.

The list price for the cheapest, bottom of the range Ford Focus is now £16,000....

Sounds a bit like my wedge.................except for the turbo lag. Errr and the 15k price tag. BUT......I do have THE NOISE!!!!

LOL

Wish I had taken more pics of mine. Luved it, although the full oxblood red leather interior was probably a bit OTT smile

They say the Pen is mightier than the sword. I say the pen is mightier than CAD.
Don't you mean the ruler is mighter than the CAD?

I love the way they managed to make a stunning car with all flat glass. One of the all time greats, amazing to think the original show car was unvieled in 1972. My brother left a non running 1978 Special Edition in my shed for about 2 years. We only ever got it started once and I still congratulate myself on resisting the temptation to buy it from him; it was really difficult...

Having misplaced his French curves Giugiaro repeated his flat panels and glass act with the Panda, another design classic...

I have a red s3 which I have owned for a year now. My only car and I have wanted one since I was small and saw it drive off that ferry in the spy who loved me... It's the best fun, fast, economical, will do 30 mpg on motorway, can get two people and decent luggage in it... Also totally reliable apart from blowing the engine up two months ago, but that turned out to be s former owner's hodge going wrong... Expensive to fix but cannot wait to get it back...

Eagle-eyed Esprit fans will immediately recognise this later car as a federalised Esprit with the larger bumpers adopted to meet US construction and use requirements.

So from the owners on here I have a few questions.

What are they like to own? Are parts extortionate? Running costs? Supercar costs or more manageable.

What are the later ones like compared to the earliest?

Whats the best engines?

And do I like the really early ones or the really late ones better?

The large bumpers were the first thing I noticed too.

In a nutshell, they're fine. But just like any other car if you buy one which has been neglected there's a chance you'll be in trouble. But there are plenty of resources available to owners to maintain them including forums which will provide a wealth of experience and guidance to point out their foibles.
The factory still supports them as much as they can and are always willing to help with technical details and have recently remanufactured one or two items to help owners of older models keep them on the road.

The late ones can be and are used daily, as the car was refined and improved continually during its life. The early ones are over 30 years old and require appropriate sympathy. As for engines, well it all depends what your prefences are. I love the throttle response of carb n/a cars, but love the power of the V8s. Each has its own strength and weaknesses.

Best thing to do with them is use them.
