Good for breaking only, this one. It may be cheap, but it'll never be cheap to run. My 'best' bill on my WRX was for new head gaskets and a clutch (engine was out anyway, so may as well...). Just under £2.5k.

£650 for that seems a bargain. If it goes bang just scrap for parts.

Have bought two Impreza's, first was a 5 door which I planned to strip and use for the track, ended up selling it a month or two later without doing anything with it, the new owner later told me that it had needed a new clutch a few hundred miles later.
The second was a stripped out imported STI which managed one lap of Oulton Park before the clip on the Rad top hose went - bit of a laxative effect as the dirty brown water (pun)escapes from the engine bay onto the windscreen while doing 80-90. Lost faith after that and quickly sold it. Both cars nice and quick but too expensive if they go wrong

Not very fast by hot hatch standards but nice to drive and comfortable too, suprisingly good ride quality.

I had one from 80k on the clock which I almost doubled and which felt and looked like it would go on for ever. Fuel economy poor too, not sure it costs much more to have a WRX in truth.

But not really in the same league as a turbo, think Focus ST170 compared to the current ST.

Would I buy this wagon? No, but a saloon version at similar price would be worth a punt as once you'd fixed it might well be a long term "future classic". Perhaps...

We've got a 2.0 NA Impreza. A very useful shed, although I am wondering if we should have got rid instead of fixing that wheel bearing. It's probably going to need headlight adjusters doing to get through the next MOT, it's due a cambelt change, and I know Imprezas of this age can be rotten underneath. It's at the point now where we just run it until something goes wrong or it fails an MOT and take a scrap/repair decision at that point.

Great cars these 'wagons' (I've had 2)but not with these potentially expensive faults.

What kind of performance would this have had when new?

About the same as a Civic Type-R, so round about the slower end of first division hot hatches.

I had been warned of classic Imprezas, especially leggy ones. I do still want one but might hold out for the 2.5 STI/WRX models as I was told they were more reliable.

Anyone know of any buying guides or advise that would help with all the different models?

215bhp @ 5600 rpm, 0-60 in 5.4 and Power to weight was 177bhp (1235kg kerb, saloon). No idea on the wagon but I would assume fairly close.

Looks like an ok deal to me. I would have thought you would get similar money selling all the spares. I bought a car for £500 with an engine rattle once...turned out to be a loose water pump lol, £40 and my mechanic brother and we had a fully working car. Not going to put my money where my mouth is with this one though, as I have no money. Would put someone elses money there if they are kind enough biggrin

I just love the fact that on top of the "engine knock" admission in the ad, the seller has gone to the trouble of showing the Car Scrapper's truck that is obviously about to take it off to oblivion. Like the remark "WAS BEING USED REGULARLY UP UNTIL LAST WEEK". So was the Space Shuttle...
