RE: Driven: BMW M5

It's personal taste, but this amuses me: in 2004, the threads about the new E60 M5 were full of posts about how it didn't hit the mark and the E39 was a stunner in every respect.
Wasn't there much decrying of the E39 when it eventually came along, much in the vein of bewailing the loss of the hallowed Motorsport six, instead it was just a "warmed up 540i" and it was too big and heavy etc. There was probably similar when E28 gave way to E34 too, but I'm not that old to recall. Plus ça change...

For the M group, Isn't this car another step away from a sensitive, full of feel, balanced, charismatic yet potent real drivers car (ultimate drivers machine) towards an insensitive, numbed feel, not as charismatic as it should be, overly potent businessman's motorway muncher car (ultimate autobahn machine)?
I'm sure it's epic, but something's definitely been lost along the way..

Can't help feeling the same way.
I had an E39 M5 until earlier this year - best car I have ever owned or will ever own, I expect.
Also, how many of these do BMW expect to sell in the UK? I'm guessing genuine sales (not dealer pre-reg etc) will be tiny, not least because this doesn't look like a £80k - £90k car. Whilst subtlety was an M product bonus, this model is too bland and non-descript, IMHO.

Seriously, the M5 is just not making me 'love it'. I am very impressed - you couldn't fail to be - but it feels its size and weight. (2 tons with me in it!)
It feels very grown up where the V10 had an enjoyable sense of silliness.
I'm sure there'll be a lot of love for it elsewhere, and justifiably.

All great sounds coming out of the exhaust pipes!
Whereas M engines are more known for the pleasing noises they make prior to combustion...Zwoelf said:

The E34 Chassis was so much better, more comfortable, new look etc -in the early days, the cars fetched premiums.
I think one of the key things about the new M5 is that however good it is (and I am sure that it is a stonking car), the market is different now. Older iterations of M cars have pretty much had the market to themselves...their competition were totally inert Audis (RS6 from 2 generations ok?!) or flabby AMGs (E55 etc). It's not the same now...AMG are making some proper driver's cars, still with the mental engines. Yes the M cars will still have the edge on track but the gap is nowhere near as much these days. A few years ago I would not even have considered getting anything else other than an M5 but now...an E63 probably provides 90% of the dynamism of the M5 with a whole lot of bad-ass AMG character. And if you want more style there is always the CLS63 or even the Jag XFR.
As a buyer of these sort of cars though the choice has never been better...

Weeeeeeeee! (Chris Harris's e28)
I remember being so excited reading about the e39, must have read the autocar road test 20 times. The E60 with its silly v10 engine was also pretty exciting, did many miles with a work colleague in one. That v10 noise, speed, and always seeming to be looking for a petrol station...
For some reason this M5 just doesn't do it for me, yet!

The E39 doesnt really sound very loud so I dont see how the noise thing matters so much, its just a quiet beat at 120 or so, just letting you know its there and at high revs in a low gears its never really that loud anyway.
So the noise thing is nonsense I reckon.
I see from your profile that you have a E39 523 so it's not really representative of the discussion here IMO.So the noise thing is nonsense I reckon.
On my old M5, you could hear it but it was a bit too quiet. I removed the back boxes so it was straight-through from the centre boxes. It sounded fantastic!
This car will be epic, it looks more subtle than the last one and certainly compared to the AMG & the RS audis is almost tame, Which is why I love it.
Effortless pace without looking like it should be lined up on a starting grid somewhere, granted in this day and age it has had to move with the times and they wouldnt be able to whack a stonking great V12, even the flagship cars these days need to be worried about emmisions and MPG but thats just the way it goes. I for one want them to sell as many as possible because then that increses my chances of being able to one day pick one up second hand.
