I can vouch for Redex. If your big stinky V8, with no Cat fails the MOT on emissions buy some Redex and put a teaspoon full of it in your tank (or whatever amount you like). Take it a run, bring it back and get your mate Dave to stick the probe up some other exhaust pipe and hey presto it's a pass!

When there was a borderline fail he would tell the customer to put in Wurth, he sold the stuff, and drive it around for a day and a run for 5 miles up the m'way at a high hot engine speed. I asked if it does work? He said "yes, every time". He said it is best to use it on a full tank just before taking the car into an MOT to be sure, to be sure. But make sure the tank is below 1/4 full so the additive can do its work.

A girlfriend's Toyota Yaris is due for an MOT. It has done 70,000 miles of stop-start running. I said to her put Redex in the tank as if the MOT is marginal it may push it over, saving money on mechanics bills. A 4 shot bottle was on offer for £5 at Halfords. I put some in for her and she happened to go on a 100 mile round trip the next day. She said the engine was smoother and gave more power. This surprised me as I thought she would not notice any difference if there was any. She is not the sort who notices engine noises and the likes being 100% non-mechanical. She doesn't know how to check the oil. The Redex must have cleaned out the fuel system and injectors somewhat, which had never been treated. She is going to put it in every 3 months as the bottle has 4 shots. The MOT is due next week.
I put the stuff in my car before every MOT and at least once between MOTs. I don't notice any difference as my fuel system must pretty well be clean being regularly treated.

The standard Redex is designed to be added to each tank full of fuel so is relatively weak (and expensive). STP and Wynn produce cleaners that are designed to be used every 3k mikes or so which is much more cost effective (if they work).
Premium brand fuels already have sophisticated cleaning agents included so I don't think the use of additional cleaning agents will make much difference. Supermarket fuels have less cleaning agents so use of additional cleaning agents may make a difference.
I use either STP or Wynn's every 3k miles or so on vehicles that regularly use supermarket fuels. Whether it does any good or not I can't really tell other than to say that the emissions on a 109k mile Range Rover, which has quite a diet of supermarket fuel, are exceptionally clean at its MoT tests with no discernible difference from year to year.

No, I think the formula is set to be used for each tankful so doubling the dose may help but is probably not strong enough to shift 'muck' accumulated over a period of time. Redex do an 'advanced' cleaner that, similar to the STP and Wynn offerings, should be used every few k miles but I've never come across it on the usual outlets' shelves.
Halfords carry STP and Wynn fuel cleaners. They are clearly marked for petrol or diesel use and a quick check on the dosage will show the recommended mileage intervals (3k). As I said in the earlier post I cannot confirm if they actually work but the clean emissions and good running of the engines does support something good is going on. The only way to really confirm is to take the cylinder heads off and check the valves and piston crowns etc. . . . . . and I'm not doing that!!!

I swear on the use of redex. I used to work for renault leeds and we used to get trade ins that had seazed engines at times. We use to pour redex into the pistons and let it sit for a week. After that more often than not the engines would run again. I had a renault 5 that seized up. I did the same at home with that and the engine ran again for about 10000 miles before I sold it. I've always used it at every second fill up especially with using cheap supermarket fuel. My renault scenic 1.5tdi was getting about 43mpg town driving before I first used redex now after regular use I now get 55mpg town driving. It's much more responsive and runs much better when cold started. For oil adative use stp oil treatment. It's better than the redex oil treatment. Makes the engine run much more quiet and smoother. I wonder if stp oil treatment would help if used in the gearbox as second gear can be a bit stiff at times when cold.

That's a lie. How would a bottle of redex fix a seized engine?I remember back in the day lobbing loads of this into my Alfa Twin cam and sort of believing that the snake oil worked. I suspect it contained some sort of octane booster, so throttle response did seem more crisp when initially driven.
The point where I realised that it was utter twaddle was when I stripped down that engine and thought "if Redex cleans carbon in an engine, then clearly it will clean carbon on the bench". So I filled an eggcup with the stuff and stuck a manky intake valve in it. Next morning: no change. Tried scrubbing it: no change. Tried heating the valve (soaked in the stuff) with a blow torch: no change. I might as well have soaked the valve in water for all the difference it made.
It was marketing BS in the 80s and it is today. Putting my chemistry hat on - if it really could dissolve carbon deposits, it would certainly dissolve the plastic bottle it was in, and it would dissolve human flesh. It would be an extraordinarily dangerous compound, certainly not for sale to the public in Halfords.
