I think the ultimate rallying experience was this, the Mobil 1 Rally Challenge. Top circuit and rally drivers of the day driving identical Novas, Cosworths, M3s, Integrales over various rally stages, including the Isle of Man.

Rally heaven.

No surprise why they attracted such a star studded field, the whole thing was designed for tv, in much the same way as Rallycross was designed to bring rallying of a sort to the small screen, within the limitations of the number of cameras and the tech at the time, that broadcasters (read BBC) could deploy, this was another way bringing "proper" rallying in a manageable BBC Grandstand chunk, to a prime time Saturday afternoon slot for the sponsors as well, bearing in mind that rallies at the time, were much longer affairs, running often in darkness, that ran the length/breadth of the country for the RAC etc. Now the tech has caught up to, and the rallies down to a much smaller foot print, then you don't need this to bring rallying to the masses, or maybe it does, although you can argue whether the rallies & rallying are/is better or a paler version of what there were once.

Hmmm good those lick

Looking forward to Race Retro at Stonleigh on 25 & 26 February where there will be the usual Rally cars having a little thrash smokin
Mightymouse: don't you find the RR stage a bit Mickeymouse though? They barely get out of 2nd gear. It's all 90° corners from what I remember and not at all suited to the Group B warriors. I didn't go last year but did previously a couple of times. Has it changed?
I've been to it once, it was ok and nice the see the cars moving, but I wouldn't call it that great.

Get yourself along to a proper historic/classic rally and see them in proper action. biggrin

Lacking the Grp B's I admit, but with free admission this is good bit of rally car spectating: http://southdownsstages.co.uk/
Can't disagree with you over the stage being a bit mickeymouse, but it is better than nothing to see and hear a proper Quattro chattering, plus other ex-works cars running.
Regarding proper Historic / Classic rallys'......oh trust me I get out on as many events, tarmac and gravel, as I can at weekends so I get my fill / fix ....... bounce

There is something more "honest" about these retro rally cars.

Awesome footage, What a selection of cars, F/Engine rear wheel drive, mid engine, 4wd all in the same class!!

Interesting to note in a previous reply someone mentioned the year later most manufacturers went 4WD, did this have the same effect of bringing all cars within seconds of each other?? rather than minutes

Noticed how the commentator pronounced Talbot as "Toll-Butt". I've always thought it was "Tal-Bow", with the last T being silent.

Have I been saying it wrong all these years?

Awesome vids, BTW; had no idea that they rallied the Rover SD1! It's HUGE compared to the other cars.

Well, you are in USA land, where anything vaguely French sounding gets Frenchified. e.g. Herbs.

Definitely a French thing. Because there was basically a French and a British Talbot in years gone by, all rolled up into one by the time that Peugeot resurrected the name in 1979, our friends across the channel think of it as their own and pronounce it as such, while here in Blighty we see it as a British thing, and the last 't' definitely gets pronounced (although the a can be short of long, depending on where you are from). The Sunbeam Lotus, by the way, has no French to it (apart from financing) so they can jolly well keep their hands off claiming that...
