Sorry, another question re Trade In
What happens with trade-in's which are effectively worth next to nothing? Do they still go to auction?
Eg, my trade-in for a £20k(ish) Discovery will be a 1994 Japanese Import Toyota HiLux with interstellar mileage (can't be accurate since the oddometer broke some years ago), some rust, a few scrapes, fairly shabby interior, a few electrical things which don't work, etc... but has decent tyres, is serviced regularly enough to keep it going, and will probably go for ever. It is unlikely to be of any value to anyone other than me I guess. How do you value them, is there somewhere that these type of cars end up, who then buys them?
I traded in a 13-year-old Peugeot 406 when I bought my car brand new. I got £200 for it, which I was happy with, as it had a few minutes' MoT and not much chance of another one. It went to auction; it was re-taxed shortly afterwards but was scrapped within a month or two. What happens with trade-in's which are effectively worth next to nothing? Do they still go to auction?

I'd only even consider p/x on something like that if I thought that I'd already pushed the deal as hard as I could go. The HiLux would go well on eBay (you'd be surprised what exporters will pay for something like that) but would be a really hard sell in the mainstream trade, where it might not easiliy get underwritten by the usual series of dealers down to the Arfur Daleys. So auction or scrap would be most likely, but it might still be £1k on eBay... or £200 p/x and haggling over that last £50 for the swapper might be distracting you from the last £500 on the top line price.

Edit: I guess yours is a Surf, but this is what a grand buys you in the Hilux world: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOYOTA-HI-LUX-/230773244...
And that one hasn't even been on Top Gear.Point remains that if said Surf seller has the spare time and inclination to deal with the great unwashed and especially those on the 'bay, he stands to be a bit better off than if he takes the probably paltry px value.

Traded, eBay, scrap or sold to a valeter/mechanic for them to tidy or fix up and sell!
Acquantaince picked up a tidy E30 for £200 from his aunt as that's what she'd been offered as a Part/Ex. It wasn't worth a fortune but at least £500 all day long, at the end of the day the dealer didn't really want it hence the low price and I can't blame them, they are there to make money, not take a gamble on how much you'd get for a 30 yr old BMW.Any salesmen know about free insurance offers? I ordered a new car in March, delivery time not expected until the last week in June. At the time of ordering there was a free insurance offer, which is still ongoing, but the dealership said that you only get it if the offer is still running when you pick up the car, not when you order it. Is this correct?
Thanks.
Thanks.
A question undeserving of its own thread...
If a dealer has a car on sale for £7500
and they'll px my car for £8000
and the outstanding finance on mine is £6000
The dealer would settle the finance.
Instead of the dealer setting me up for a (Barclays) loan of his car for £5500. Could he give me back the £500 difference between mine and his cars and setup the finance for £6000? Is there anything wrong with this?

No reason why not, just have to ask. I've done it before. If a dealer has a car on sale for £7500

Is your car the Skoda in your profile? If so, £8k sounds like a fairly insulting offer. If a dealer has a car on sale for £7500

well after a busy weekend, I now have upto 7 cars, at least 5, being delivered tomorrow. Plus have a new General Manager starting, so the first impression hes going to get of me is not going to be great, once I start running around the workshop having not prepped cars right and the valeters not having cleaned them. Though, so long as they all go out, its is going to mean I hit my unit target and get a nice lift in my wages. Will make up for March at least.
Hows everyone else's end of month going to look?

Can we have a look at this dent please? I'm guessing 1.2k is main stealer price.
2.2k was the main dealer price! I'm happy that 1-1.2 is the cheapest I'll get it done for.I think the dealer I saw priced in about 600ish, he has his own body shop...
