What's the deal with this? Are they saying it has no grip but it IS balanced.

Surely that's dangerous on normal wet country roads but fun on track.
Surely that makes its grip characteristics LESS usefully on a British road than straight line speed cars on roads

It sounds like its a very good drive indeed, though could be a bit quicker! However, I just dont like it at all. I think it just looks rubbish for some reason.
Same here. The interior may not be totally s***, but they clearly didnt try very hard. And the exterior again, may not be totally s***, but it is pretty s****y and just think about how this thing could have looked scratchchinmad

It makes me crazy angry that for once a car is accessible and drives so darn well but it falls down hard on looks. It didnt have to look perfect but sure as hell deserves to look better weepingbanghead

A few predictable 'needs more power' posts. There are plenty of cars that are quick in a straight line (a £1000 Clio 172 wouldn't be troubled by it), but that's completely missing the point and then some.

If anything, I hope this leads to even cheaper, lighter, less powerful fun cars. I still long for a C1 knocking on the door of 100hp.

Sounds really promising to me.

Sounds like it gives you the choice via the electronics. And one person's lack of grip is another's interactive driving experience....smile

Oh nobody cares about diesel A5's. I can't think of anything more dull.
A lot of people must care as Audi sells lots of them
Most people don't care about driving as opposed to image/build/perceived status/performance and Audi is perhaps the best example for this........ What pains me is that Audi produced the R8 so it's not like their engineers are clueless (or did they outsource chassis development/setup.....smile )

I'm looking forward to test driving either the Toyota or Subaru. Can't help thinking 250bhp would be better, but then (through the use of man maths) 300bhp would be better then that and so on ....

still, looking forward to it.
I think it would be worse with 300bhp... that would either mean a bigger engine (which would presumably be heavier and upset the balance) or a turbo (which would ruin the throttle response).

I dare say there will be a more powerful version along at some point, but I wouldn't want it.

It will be interesting to see what the car weighs when independent mags etc get it on the scales. I hope the weight they suggest isn’t the weight of some Japanese lightweight super basic special [like the RS Lancer EVO's) and the actual weight of one normal people will actually buy – as most people who buy this car will use it everyday, - it won’t be an expensive weekend toy or the likes

Chris says 'If Toyota brings a poverty-spec version to the UK, as is expected by many people. This is a genuinely light vehicle' but if you are spending over £25k on a car, and its a car you plan to use daily [as should be the case] then you wont want a total poverty spec one with no radio, aircon crappy seats etc. Maybe a proper spec'd one will weight 1200kg, hope so. As it’s a tiny car and there is no reason what it shouldn’t. Next MX5 is apparently on target to be under 900kg, now that is genuinely light vehicle. But Chris Harris won’t like it I’m sure, even if the rest of the world does wink

No, not being able to feel a lack of grip is potentially dangerous.

Easy chap, you're in danger of being a little too pulled in by the marketing. I'm a big fan of this car, though I prefer the Subaru BAZ, but being slower than a mk5 Golf would be an issue as away from the track or deserted country roads it is always more fun to have a little bit of poke to play with. The balance sounds wonderful, but I'll bet you'd be a little bored after a week.

I think that Daniel1 is right, 250bhp and a bit more oomph would make this an awesome prospect as I doubt that the chassis is so finely balanced that it would be ruined by the weight of a turbo.

Some of the best drives I've ever had have been in a car that can't get to 60 in 12 seconds let alone 7. I think 7 is plenty fast enough.

If you want straight line speed, plenty of cars offer it. I don't.

This and the BRZ are the two cars I've most been looking forward to reading about. I think both Toyota and Subaru should be congratulated for bringing out cheap, good looking (well I think anyway), fun drivers cars. A bit of a rareity these days if you ask me. Who cares if they're not quick, the best (drivers) car I've ever owned was a Peugeot 1.9 and that could barely break 8 seconds to 60, but still an absolute hoot to drive.

I can't believe after the amount of threads and discussion there's been on the GT86 that people are still missing the point of it.

It is such a shame it looks terrible, as I really like the idea of it and all initials test of it are very good. If it was less than £20k I would put up with the looks but it will be over £25k and I don’t think I could spend that money on something that looks so bad, tacky even - esp. the rear lights [very 1999 lexus styleee].

For say £20k you could get a LOT of used car and spend the extra £5k on the increased running costs. And this thing will st its value like a brick - as all news cars do [excluding some exotic stuff like 911 GT3 RS 4.0s and 458's etc] so a used car would be a better long term prospect too. But I will maybe buy used FT-86 ‘phase 2 [with much improved looks’ in 5 yrs time for 10k wink

That red trim on the interior is only an option, there's a dark grey available instead.

It is what it is, fun in the corners, and responsive to inputs, without nannying the driver. I can't wait to try it.

To some up the GT 86

Great car just a pity it looks st and is too expensive

I followed this car from its inception. The original concepts looked amazing and it was to be a sub £20k car. Now they have totally ruined the styling and it will cost £25k - prob even more with a decent spec. And there are gonna be performance options from day 1, like uprated brakes, diff etc - so you could be talking £30k

I want one of these.

Good review apart from the word "ickle" so I gave a zero. Harsh I know but a line has to be drawn somewhere.
