RE: SOTW: Subaru Impreza Turbo

And they are available with FSH at that money; I'm just enquiring about a W reg, 110k with full history, cambelt change, every bill, receipt, service stamp etc, well under £1k!
Just watch for rust on the arches, accident damage, cambelt change, regular oil changes and that the MAF is ok (if it fails it can lunch the engine).

Why do people say ruinous running costs ? Are they really that expensive to run ? Why ? What goes wrong ?
Not much really. Fuel costs are quite high. At this age/price servicing can be done at home. I can change the oil in mine in less than 20 mins, really easy access. They did cooking models as well but they are easy to spot as look very plain, they did a Sport which was a Turbo look alike with a 2.0 engine of about 150 bhp as well.
Good shed, assuming the engine is ok, it doesnt need a clutch imminently and the gearbox is ok. Looks like its been looked after and not abused, just that time and miles have caught up on the bodywork but sure that could be sorted if so inclined. They are a bit rubbish on fuel but look what you get in exchange, decent performance, even now from a standstill not a lot is quicker up to about 40 mph anyway, then there is the 4wd, decent handling and even the image for an un-barried, original Wagon is on the up, in fact the wagons never seemed to attract the same negative connotations. Plus you get that noise, I have never owned one but been in a few and love them, its just the wife hates them with a passion though if she ever relented a wagon would be less offensive.
I suspect if the oily bits are decent it would break for more than a grand.
They do handle but they arent unfallible, usually end up having very fast crashes when they do have one when people get cocky.

Have had two, first up was an RA spec wagon that I bought with the intention of stripping out for the track (The last £50 chipped off the price was through the flip of a coin!)have to say that it didnt really feel that fast and so I moved it on - I later found out that the clutch went within a week!
The second was a stripped out STI with extra boost that flew, unfortunatly first time out at Oulton Park the clip on the top hose failed and dumped rusty water under the bonnet and onto the windscreen (Loosens the bowels when you loose complete vision at 80mph braking for the next corner surrounded by other cars) The car refused to start again until the following day when the electrics had dried out, I lost faith in it and sold it on.
Have been tempted again since but have resisted so far....

Only downside to the wagons is more exhaust/road noise which - if you put a mental exhaust and tyres on it - will become pretty wearing...
Otherwise what's not to like?
Nothing wrong with a bit of flat four fruit. Run it till it breaks then parts bin on Ebay and I'll reckon you'll have near depreciation free motoring - great shed!Otherwise what's not to like?
