Yes, bear in mind that Autocar test was a very early L-reg UK spec one - very lethargic in 5th Gear and quite slow from 60-100.When they tested the revised model in Feb 98 ( a 5-door ) it was nearly 100kg heavier ( 1306kg ), even quicker to 60 ( 5.5 ) and 3 seconds faster to 100 ( 15.8 ) with 6 mph more top end ( 143 ). Still all from 208bhp. For whatever reason, gearing etc, the early L/M regs seem a lot slower than later cars with similar power.
Autocar also tested a 22B, WR Prodrive and WRX STi that same year ( 1998 was the beginning of the surge in Impreza/Evo coverage in the media )and they were all quicker to varying degrees. The Sti jumped to 60 in 4.6 and onto 100 in 12.3 with its extra 70ish bhp. Lightning quick even today
Good knowledge.
What about the 22B Autocar tested? I seem to recall it managed only 139 flat out which always bemused me. I'm not sure if it was the short geared (jap?) one or the other one. My friend claims he's seen 160 (speedo) in his Jap example, so I'm not sure what that's all about. Sounds like its geared to do more than 140. Maybe they vary a lot or it depends on the wing position. The turbo I drove was a S-plate uk wagon, standard and good nick but it didn't feel as quick as 15.8s to 100... But like I say, it's really not the point. It's about covering ground without having to accelerate hard; maintaining cornering speed. If only there was enough time and money to own everything, I would have one already..

That's what the Forester and Legacy are for.

Autocar got 149 out of the 22B they tested - you could probably add another 3 or 4 mph on for a good straight so about a true 153/154 ish. 160 on the speedo seems perfectly possible

Interesting that lots have commented on how they need be fully wound to get proper enjoyment from driving them. I would say that this was the thing I really didn't like, high cornering speeds with little information of when the limit was approaching. I would imagine lots ended up in the hedge...

I quite enjoy just burbling around in mine.
Decent ride quality by modern standards, good control integration and nice noises mean I can enjoy a relaxed low speed journey.

You'll run out of talent and balls before your Subaru runs out of grip unless you're doing something really stupid!!

Having a look on scoobynet and good 2nd hand engines for these £400, gearboxes £200, Turbos £150. Access to a friendly spanner man or do the work yourself and your laughing.

Is there a bigger performance bargain out there sub £1500? Hopeing to get one of these bought soon, get some spot lights on the front for some country road night hooning.

Well worth knowing. A fresh engine for the cost of a cam belt change......?

Not "fresh" exactly. And a good engine swapped in (when you'll want to do belts Anyway, for safety) is at LEAST £1500....
Rebuilds are £3k ish. Not cheap.

you'd never get insured for one at 18! well not for anything less than twice what the car is selling for!

was looking at one just last week, before it was SOTW. had a quick search for Insurance on a non turbo example. i’m 29, been driving over 5yrs now, have 3yrs no claims (2yrs on parents policy), and had it down for under 8k miles a year policy. cheapest i got was just under £930 for fully comp. bizarrely it was over a grand for 3rd party fire and theft!?

There was very little difference in quotes for the estate or saloon in these either.
have also been looking at a boggo 2ltr Legacy saloon that’s for sale local at £400. Same thing with the quotes, and none seem to be willing to give me a insure it for its value policy either.

I'm so glad the insurance gods seem to smile on me: £500 for a 2004 WRX PPP wagon.... I am 31 though. frown

People in the know can do a swap in a day and charge about £500.

Worth baring in mind that tax is considerably cheaper on pre 2001 models compared to Imprezas (or anything similar performance) nowadays. So while insurance is more, you'll save on tax.

Man maths! thumbup

this i had worked out too. but i had i worked out as most pre 2004/2005 were still in the good tax bracket, before the gov decided anything 4x4 was obviously contributing to world annihilation

They're a max of £260 if registered before March 2006, so you don't even need a really old one. Some imports are £260 regardless, or just plain in the wrong tax bracket..
