If audi are to become serious with their small (read real sports cars) performance cars they will have to figure a way out of Haldex. j

It's called "inflation".

What I want to know is how the hell a 260bhp 4wd car of that size is so slow to 60? Similar power to weight ratio to my car, better power to drag ratio and better traction yet it's slower?
A 2.0l turbo hatchback that gets to 60 in 5.7 seconds... cue flashback to 1989:

What are you on about?

Strangest post on PH so far in 2012 award. I'd love to know the rationale.

As a classic car tragic I have to say the A1 is pretty much the only new car (Maserati QP excepted, maybe) on sale at the moment that has any appeal to me. I just think that if Audi could bring themselves to sell it for the same price as the Polo it could take the world by storm, become the VW Beetle for the 21st century, and get the younger generation interested in cars again.

I have to agree with this though... Maybe the quattro drivetrain is too heavy for a small car?

Hmmm.....a heavily and expensively modified for performance version in an extremely limited run, and words like "homologation" being banded around?

I'd say CH knows a little more than he's allowed to let on?

Aside from the possible 4WD derivatives, is Audi going back to it's performance roots and cooking up a WRC version, and that's really what Quattro GmbH are so "busy" with?????

I'm no lover of Audi, but that's just silly. No mention of a car in his profile either, as predicted.

hmmm

if they are going rallying and this is the new ur quattro I want it even more

not sure on the homologation thou as its now 1.6ltr blown engines and no haldex

but the new regs is for small cars!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Rally_Car

Starting in 2011, rules for WRC cars have changed to be more restrictive. Now the regulations are derived from the ones for S2000 cars, with a different engine and an aerodynamic kit. The cars are smaller models (there is no longer a minimum 4m length), with a 1600 cm3 direct injection turbo engine with a 33 mm diameter air restrictor and a maximum pressure of 2.5 bar absolute (this will limit torque to about 400 N.m or less[3]). Exotic materials (titanium, magnesium, ceramics and composite) are forbidden except when present in the base model. Carbon fibre and aramid fibre are very restricted ("only one layer of fabric is used and is affixed to the visible face of the part"), except for bodywork's side protections where multiple layers of aramid fibre are allowed. The gear changes must be made with a mechanical system (so paddle shifters are not allowed). There is no center differential (earlier it used to be 3 differentials, with a center/3rd differential included), but the new regulation allows only front and rear axle differential (eliminating the center differential to run down on the cost and make it more economical), and they must be mechanical, without electronic control or hydraulic or viscous systems (from 2006 to 2010 the center differential and previously all 3 could be active[4]). Minimum weight is 1200 kg empty and 1350 kg with driver and co-driver (in both cases with only one spare wheel).[5]

40K... for an A1 which is basically Skoda Fabia crossed with a Renault 5. What planet are Audi on. I know for sure that if I was going to spend 40K on a new car, it'd be the Alfa 4C or a good used RS4/RS6 or E60 M5....

40K... What blithering idiot is going to spend that kind of money on an A1....?
