Drag is irrelevant in 0-60.
confused Are you saying that a car has no drag at 60mph?
He's not saying there is no drag, just that it is inconsequential at 60mph in a 260hp car.

MPH KM/H Aero (a) Rolling (b) Total % Aero % Rolling Watts HP HP Aero HP Roll'n MPG(USgal)
60 97 304.97 152.72 457.68 66.63% 33.37% 13,776 16.46 10.97 5.49 25.72
140 225 1,660.39 152.72 1,813.11 91.58% 8.42% 114,974 152.17 139.35 12.82 7.19

Variables for these results:

Vehicle weight: 1297.3 kg / 2860 lbs
Crr: .012
Cd: .34 (added 0.02 to A1's official 0.32 for styling bumf)
A: 2 m2 / 22 ft2
Fuel energy density (Wh/US gal.): 33557
Engine efficiency: .22
Drivetrain efficiency: .80
Parasitic overhead (Watts): 1500
rho: 1.22 kg/m3

The A1 at 60mph loses approx 11hp to aero drag and 5.5 to rolling resistance. The rest, bar a bit of drivetrain loss is all accelerative goodness. At 140 mph the aero is killing it by taking 139hp, from a total of probably no more than 190 at the wheels.

I think they are charging 40k because they can. I can't imagine they would do much depreciating either. May be a good investment for a collector. As already mentioned like the sport classic.

there probably loosing money on them if they dont make any more 4WD A1s afterwards, the cost of RnD over 333 cars puts the price up a fair chunk

I'm not quite sure why considering people who will pay £40k for a Polo-sized car anything other than "shallow" is an issue nor how it relates to having a chip on anyone's shouder. There are cars that will do all that for a lot less.

However, I'm not one to buy designer labels and there is little question that Audi is a very successful one. I recall the pre-Quattro days when they were mainly rebadged VWs... aaah.
There's always something that will do what you want for a lot less. So that line of reasoning is utterly pointless.

Nobody that wallows in their social standing will buy this to further that purpose. Because its a tiny little Audi that looks ostensibly like any other. So that line of reasoning is equally flawed.

I like the honesty of the review, I'm glad that at least 1 journalist has the sense to not take an opinion from driving on ice. Also, it is refreshing to se a journalist mention that the electronics get it wrong sometimes.

FFS -- why buy a CockMobile for £40K when for a lot of change you could have an Impreza WRX STI or better?

Epic Fail of a CockMobile!

You're missing the point - that is exactly what it is but the "Emperor's New Clothes" means it will be seen as "the new Audi Quattro".

Hard to think of a vehicle that falls more into cock-mobile territory than an Evo or Scooby in my opinion, this is pretty tasteful & discreet by comparison, for people in the know rather than people who want to get attention.

Emperors new clothes???
Again, I totally disagree. Who on earth will see this as 'the new Audi Quattro'?
Maybe the new RS4 or TTRS Plus annouced a few days ago, but not this A1.

This is in essence a PR generator to get people talking about Audi (& it's kind of worked...)
The car itself will to appeal to wealthy enthusiasts who are less concerned with 'value'.
Poseur wagons tend to be loaded with bling rather than performance focussed - e.g. the Aston Cygnet as has been mentioned previously.

You're clearly not an Audi fan - fair enough - but your reasoning seems way off beam.

Jesus Christ, there is a lot of st chat in this thread.

Why can't people see that this is a fast and capable hot-hatch and nothing else?

It's not a rally-rep. It's not a supercar, it is what it is, and because they are not making millions of them, you'll have to pay for the privilege of getting unique bits like 4WD on your Audi A1. It sounds like Audi are going to sell every one they make, so obviously there are enough buyers there.

They probably wouldn't buy your Subaru Impreza or whatever you care to mention as an alternative anyway, so why does anyone care about "what they could have bought"?

Im surprised its so heavy, subaru's and evo's from the early 00's weighed around 1300 for much larger cars..
