Good morning/afternoon/evening I have just put a cheque in my bank account from Her Majesties Revenue and Customs for overpaid Tax three and four years ago. This means I have have £750 to buy a classic. I'd prefer something tax exempt as I'd like to avoid the DVLA as much as possible. I love MGB's but also really like pop up lights and Fiats so the X-1/9 is in my cross hairs as well. I don't mind doing work on cars either so a worth while "project" can be considered as well.

So pre-72, pop up lights or interesting.

Happy hunting.

All suggestions appreciated.

P.S I don't like the "dub scene" lot; so no Beetles please. wink

I would suggest that a £750 'B' would be rotten as a 10 week old pear. - Steer clear, you could spend that again on sills and wings (at least).

it did for my B

No pop ups, but interesting.

Not pre 1972 but a 924 would be doable.

Or if you're brave and want a project RX7

That Rover 2200 is in my neck of the woods and you've found my old TR40! Small world. I took it as a part exchange against my Mini Cooper because I wanted the V8 for my B Gt but sold it to RobSport instead as it was so rare. Ended up fitting an S14 200sx engine and bits to the B instead. wink

I've already asked the chap how much it's cost to transport the X-1/9. smile

924 is a good shout. VW van parts so cheap to maintain.

I prefer the 13B...

...to the 12A. Less hardtop MX5 looking and more reliable. wink

Reckon you're gonna struggle to get anything other than a pile of rust for that money.

Cheapest Minor I found was £800 without an MoT, and an MGBGT for £900 'needing bodywork' in Scotland.

Interested to see what people can find for that dosh. smile

X1/9s rust like buggery. My mate had one in the early 80s and even after 5 years, it was flaking away.

If you can find one thats not too far gone and under the 1/1/73 cut off for the DVLA, go for the X1/9, if you get bored, you can always throw in a larger motor smile

£750 classic?? Depends on what you consider a classic.

ANything in that price region is going to require you doing some work to it.

Have you though about the PH favourite, the MX5. You can get them from £900 upwards.

A ford Puma would bge a good bet too.

For proper classics, I'd look at a series 3 Land Rover and just go and buy a welder and prepare for a few late nights in the garage.

A puma might be a classic one day but there are far too many for it to be even close yet (oh and they are as rusty as some of the old stuff mentioned).

The thing I've found is that it's more a case of what's available, rather than what you want. How about this?

Now that is a properly epic car imo. A guy I was at college with 10 years back had a thing for these, he had a V8, it was properly ropey with hanging bodywork, but was still properly cool.

Anytime I think of an SD1 this video comes to mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTN5X4JZFjU
