Now that would be a good thing.

I get the feeling that "light weight" could mean anything between 1200kg and 1500kg but I've a nasty feeling that it will end up falling towards the higher end of that range.

Supercharged V6 sounds good, though. smile

It does not need to be 2 tons with 500bhp. It needs to be LIGHT WEIGHT.

Am I right in saying that the 80's F-Type ended up becoming the DB7 in the end? At least in parts?
No. F-type never made it off the drawing board. When it was shelved, there were debates over whether it would be front, or mid-engined.

DB7 was based on an XJ-S floorpan and running gear and I6 engine.
Not entirely true. Various prototypes were made of the XJ41 and XJ42 but Ford canned teh projects. However the Ken Helfet styling did become the DB7 after some small tweaks by Ian Callum.
Hmmm. I'd question your facts there. DB7 was launched in 1994. So it must have been penciled around '91.

F-Type was canned in 2002.

Am I the only one upset by it being turned into a soft top?

Personally speaking I found the concept to be an absolute stunner

Looks dull as the soft top.

Which is bloody unusual for me to say, in fact I suspect there are some regular Thread diehards currently having heart attacks reading that.

The coupe better put some drama back into the design.

I dare say they'll produce a coupe at some point. I think starting out with the drop-top is better from a marketing perspective because it gives a stronger impression that the car was designed with the lack of structural rigidity in mind from day one (whether it really was or not). If a company produces a tin top then takes the roof off, it will always be viewed as "dynamically compromised" in a way that doesn't seem to happen the other way around.

It certainly worked for Porsche with the Boxster/Cayman.

Please, please let it have a normally aspirated V8 and look like it was intended to:

Suddenly, the Aston V8 will seem very expensive.
I disagree. If it's anything like the XK vs DB9 (which I highly suspect it will be), I can see where the extra money has gone in the Aston when comparing the two side by side. Just the finish of everything is higher, the paint is sublime and the interior is just a fantastic place to be. The Jag, as good as it may be to drive, just isn't as good as an overall package imo.

XJ41 was the F-type of the 1980's. The F-type concept pictured a few posts above was X600 (cancelled in 2002). They were completely different programs.

You'll be lucky to get a V6 in this era. If they intend to follow the future Boxter, then a turbo four pot may sell ok. Assuming Jaguar know how to make a car weigh less than Buckingham Palace. I am not convined on that one.

I can't understand why this is camouflaged. Everyone knows what it looks like; all this does is male people critical of it.

Bloody hell. I've always hoped there would be an F-Type in my lifetime that's worthy of the name.

If this is as good as I hope, my heart might explode in happiness.

If it's not, my heart might break.

Jaguar, we're rooting for you but please don't fk it up

I disagree, I've just gone from an Aston to a Jaguar XKR. Yes the Aston is finished much better than the Jag inside with high quality leather, but thats where it stops there. I feel the Jag is a much better built, more solid and put together then the hand built Aston.Technology wise, the Jag is miles ahead of the Aston. All the systems are integrated correctly all around the car, as per any modern car (even though Jag system getting a little dated). With the Aston, you could tell things where built on a budget, and that they had dipped into various parts bins to build the car. Terrible Volvo sat nav, switches and stems from a Ford etc. It was all too much of a mismatch, where as the Jag is, and feels a properly built car. I never got this feeling with the Aston.
I'm glad I ticked the box owning an Aston. I, like many, fell into the trap of wanting the most beautiful looking car in the World. Going from a 'modern car' into the Aston, felt like a huge backwards step. If the Aston was my second Sunday car, I'd have kept it. The Jag is an everyday car, that is what I need.
