Does seem to be a blatant security 'hole' with recent BMWs.

Defo a BMW issue, however they still issue the same statement about affecting other cars and BMW complies with all EU blah blah.

Tossers.

This issue alone stopped me from bothering with a BMW

BMW have told watchdog that they are making pre-2011 X3/X5's AND are extending this protection to all other models free of charge!

surely its only a matter of time before the new encryption is cracked

A friend of mine takes out a certain fuse which makes it impossible to start

not ideal but you have to do what you can

You can only assume that is why they've been avoiding it this long because it would be a costly global re-call.

With anything software based, there is always going to be a hacker somewhere that can crack it.

Loved the extra security devices that you may wish to consider - they produced a 70's Krooklok and a 10cwt wheel clamp!! - are these the proposed BMW security upgrades? smile

Not really software, though. More alarm detector positioning.

As a former owner affected by these thefts, I would encourage all owners of BMWs made between 2005-2011 to call BMW UK customer services on freephone:

0800 083 4397

to discuss your concerns. A major volume of existing customers getting in contact will cause BMW such hassle that they might decide stepping up their proactive communication with customers to fix this, ie a RECALL, is a more sensible way forward.

This is the simplest way to ensure you aren't affected of course. Anyone in the market for something decent at the moment, please avoid BMW.

It wasn't a Krooklok smile but something equally insecure that can be removed more quietly frown (choices, choices hehe ).

Regards other recent comments on this thread, I wonder how big the gap will be between what BMW say and what they actually do. My washing machine has a cycle with the same name as what BMW are trying to do... (Spin.)

Had an aswerphone message from my mom last night saying she watched Watchdog last night, (i was out and missed it), i own a 2006 120d SE, could my car potentially be a target?, obviously there are thousands of 1 series on the road, and its not exactly a disireable car but nevertheless would be interested to know...

Well it's like this. Once the joyrider scum get the hold of such tech it will be a free-for-all.

So get on to BMW and ask the question and express your concerns.

Two immediate colleagues, one with a 2011 320d and one with a 123d have both called BMW and have booked their cars in for reprogramming.

If it was a British manufacturer it would of been shut down and the staff held to ransom by the blazing torch and pitchfork clan ;0)

I just called BMW uk up and they said that everyone affected march 2007 to current will be called (not sure on those dates).

She has put a request Ito my local dealers to contact me to make a booking for the remedial work.....

This recently happened to a friend of mine but it was the new shape slk that got done whilst at meadowhall.

Its apparently quite easy to clone your remote key signal or use a signal blocker.
