What I find amazing is that JLR products are deemed to be the most unreliable brand/ vehicles on the road. Yet when looking at the classifieds and on this forum, they seem to cover colossal mileages in fairly short time scales. Surely this must prove that they aren’t as bad as their reputation suggests.

I don't think they're anywhere near as bad as their reputation makes out. If they're looked after properly they're practically indestructible. I knew of both a Disco 3 and 4 that covered colossal mileage with nothing more than routine servicing from garages that know what they're dealing with and don't cut corners.

Could this be due to the relative value of Land Rovers compared to other stuff which may be scrapped as deemed uneconomical to repair?

I’m led to believe the components on LR (and Jag) stuff is cheap crap and that’s why they break so much. Can anyone verify?

I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had major issues with their Range Rovers. And they have all been < 5 years old and < 60k ish miles.

Neighbour works as a manager on the track. Often comes up in conversation. His view is that the cars are put together by unskilled people. There is a team who inspect the cars at the end and they often glue bits of trim on.
I can't vouch for how good or not good the workers are, I'd of thought it would of all been camered up and surely robots do the bulk of it. Needless to say everyone friend I've had who has had them has had issues. The RR sport was very disirable a few years ago, still is, and lots of people I knew were getting them and they have all had similar suspension and engine issues.
I really do like the brand but it's very off-putting to think you are buying crap stuff that even the people that work there wouldn't touch.

Mother In law has an Evoque. Elec boot has packed up and the one rear door won't open. It's 5 years old has covered shopping mileage but no different to my friends 06 plate sport that also used to have a rear door issue.

Advertised as a W12, then commented in the ad as, "same as W16 in Bentley's".... M,kay.
And yes, a long list of, "oh, this and this needs looking at...."

That Merc is a good find, but it's a LOT of money. €17k with >600k km. Pffff. Dream, and indeed, on.

We've got a couple of Disco 3s at work (one of which we've owned from new), and that car has never been a problem as far as I recall. On 190k miles and only recently had its clutch changed. The other is on around 205k miles and the only real issue has been the handbrake.
As with any brand you get good and bad cars from the same line, but it depends on how they're looked after and who uses them I think.

Been offered a 13 plate 160k 1.3 diesel Fiat 500L from a bloke I work with, it’s his wife’s trade in.
I can have it for the same money as the dealer offered him, £1500.
What do you think?
Will I be buying a headache?
It’s still on the original clutch and has been extensively used to run flowers up and down the M1.
Why not .. a diesel thats sat on the motorway not like its down 160k stop start

The fact the clutch is original I think is a plus, shows how lightly used it’s been

We had one for three years from new and just over 100k

It was faultless apart from constantly blowing headlight bulbs ( they all do that Sir ! )

It was a bit plasticky but nothing broke or fell off !

Does look decent for 300k plus! To be fair the DW engine is pretty reliable, especially when serviced to schedule. Total opposite of the fragile DV6.

If you want a Fiat then why not. Sounds cheap enough. Modern diesel engines all gunk up and present problems which is why I avoid them but at part ex pricing you cant get much cheaper. I'd double check his number using WBAC. Some people claim part ex pricing but cant help sticking on a few hundred quid. Although at 1500 it still sounds cheap as chips.

I suspect it was an early one, & not necessarily representative, trouble is that a poor experience sets the expectations for the rest. A friend loves the smaller Peugeots, treats them with total contempt & they seem to soak it all up regardless smile
