I drove a 545i before I bought the Benz. It felt very sluggish and quite peaky. The Merc pulls hard from tickover and just keeps going. Motorway cruising is effortless.

So do BMW, Merc and Audi V8s drive in the 'classic' American style, or are they more 'European' as per Maserati, TVR/AJP, Ferrari etc? I didn't even bother looking at European V8s when I wanted to replace the daily driver - I went for the Hemi Jeep as I knew it would do what it said on the tin!
When i had my x5 which uses the same 4.8 V8 as in the e60/61 5 series 550i i thought the power was linear & it sounded lovely especially when revved more akin to an american v8 i thought & alot of my friends thought it sounded better than my cerb especially at lower revs.

I found the 4.8 to be too quiet when in the car for my liking but it did make you smile revving it from tickover on the drive & it rocked the car a bit which was amusing, it couldnt compete with the AJP on sound at high revs though, but not much can!

I just love V8`s any shape or form.

Thanks again all.

It's bloody difficult.

To answer a previous question - it's a (hopefully very PH reason) - I love the burble of a V8... I don't do big miles but when I do it's mostly for pleasure these days.

I want the surge of torque. The burble at 1200rpm. The <end of the world is nigh> of a big V8 with suitable exhaust echoing against a tunnel wall in the Alps as I climb out of the valley floor....

...and practicality to stick the garden waste in the back on the weekend. And pick up a lathe from an ebay sale. And not worry about how many boxes of wine I've bought in France. And I like German engineering - even if that is a cliche.

Revised shortlist:

E55AMG or E500
S4 4.2 or A6 4.2
Cayenne

I have driven the Cayenne before and an A6 (but not in 4.2 guise and they are rare). Time to see if any friends or connections have an E55AMG. Don't want to waste a dealers time.

Thanks to the owners of said cars for the offer of advice... I may well PM you... time to talk to the boss; fortunately she is a petrolhead and also wants a V8...

B7 S4 Avant owner here and very happy.

Has taken us (family of 4) on a few trips to the south of France and was a very relaxing drive (at 80+ with cruise), and with a boot full of luggage.

Would not have wanted to do it in anything tbh.

Oh,ad by all accounts, the B6 V8 stock sound is a little more reserved than the B7.

OP, If you can get hold of an RS6 plus, this would be my route given what you are looking for.

If I had the spare cash, I would honestly buy one in a heartbeat.

I had an S4 cab and have a A8 4.2 (which I think is the same engine as in the A6). The stock exhaust note on the S4 was a lot nicer, and I would put the cost of a Miltek on an S4 estate sounding a lot nicer than an A6 4.2.

If you really want the V8 burble to becomes a thunderous roar, you have to be looking at a Miltek.

After a while I found the S4's exhaust note a bit muted. I put a res Miltek on it and for the most part hated it, mainly because it had a boominess around 2000rpm, which is where the engine spent most of its time around town. Once out on the road, the exhaust note was exquisite, I admit, but I just didn't spend enough time in conditions where it was on song.

The better exhaust note is an RS4, but that's £££. And the best of all is to be found on a Maserati GranTurismo.

Might be offloading my '04 RS6 Plus (53k) in the next month or two. Might not be soon enough for you though, possibly a smdge over budget?!
What colour? OP, the RS6 plus is the thread closer IMO smile
Misano Red and has a Milltek non-resonated catback. Otherwise a standard plus.
