What I initially thought, but I know the road very well and there's nowhere for a speed trap and nothing appeared further down the road.

How did it help? It helps by showing them that their misguided views are wrong and they need to understand simple facts rather than what they perceive to be wrong just because of assumptions.

If everyone told then to 'do one' then perhaps there would be some balance.

Also - I'm in Dubai, we don't have councils and they've already speed bumped every residential road to excess so there no room left for any more - hence why I was only doing 5mph max.

I'm completely in the right and they're in the road when there is a perfectly good, and very wide, pavement - should I simply shut up because it offends them? Sorry pal - wrong bloke.

Edit to add - I'm in a stock Cayman S - it might have a bit more of a rumble than a 1.6 econobox but its very quiet at tickover - they're simply being unreasonable.

fair enough I don't know the road rules, condition and culture in Dubai - here in Blighty a)peds can use the road even when there is pavement b)there are a lot of complaints about 'war on the motorist'; shouting at someone, even if they are wrong, doesn't give the impression of someone being unhappy with 'war'. Admittedly I find it amazing anyone could complain about the noise from a cayman S - unfortunately, most people are never going to be rational debaters at the roadside, so nothing you say will convince them - being antagonistic may well let you blow off steam, but builds resentment in the long run (fine if petrolheads there don't have an anti-social reputation - not good if they do)

I agree with you - but I don't agree that its right.

I'm a vocal person - I believe that people need to complain/push back otherwise mrons think what they're doing is ok. It's not but most people just drop their heads and get on with it thinking its the best way to an easy life.

I don't seem to get that issue around here in 'the blade', it seems to cause quite tbe stir. Sadly anything a bit more special than a Mondeo ST causes a bit of fuss once you get north of the Staffs/Wolverhampton boarder.

border. We have plenty of nice cars up here chap. Southerners are just used to the perpetual din of traffic clearly.

I recently got pulled over by a beat cop and was given the "is this a road or a race track speech" when the exhaust valve opened in the Scud. I was in a stream of traffic at the time and going the same speed as everyone else...?
I thought that was unreasonable until a guy came out of his house to complain that the car was too loud as I parked it later the same week.
Living in London I'm careful not to be too much of a hooligan but I draw the line at pushing my car into a parking space to keep a terminally miserable git happy.

is that not why there is a valve? There is a "closed" setting!

A few months after I got my car I was called into the police station due to a complaint of "anti-social" driving and "aggressive acceleration" which had been reported by a member of the public. No mention of an actual incident or a "near-miss" or any "encounter" with another road user. Someone clearly couldn't cope with a slightly raspy exhaust. I have my suspicions of who it was so I ensure to always drop a cog and boot it past their house. biggrin

I don't know if the valve is purely for noise or some other reason like exhaust back pressure but, the point was that because the car got louder, in a stream of traffic, I got a talking to about speed (as per the OP's question).

As I posted on a similar thread a few months ago - I am far more impressed by a fast car that is also quiet. That's real engineering. Many on here seem proud that their car is noisy enough to annoy people! Attention seeking? Showing off? A car is just a means of transport and should be capable of being driven on public roads without generating a level of noise that is a nuisance.

My house is on a main road and, personally, I find the noise generated by small motorbikes far more annoying than any car. However, I do think that drivers of noisy cars should respect the right of others not to be disturbed by unnecessary high noise levels.

However, it is certainly true that many people assume that a higher than average noise level equates to excessive speed. So either put up with that perception or reduce the noise level. The choice is yours.

Make a point of dropping the revs and waving an apology even if you are already going normal traffic speed..It just isn't worth provoking an irate pedestrian into taking down your plate and ringing the plod. It's a boring solution but a good one especially if you're within a close radius to your home address - in the same vein, usually why most military aircraft try not to transit to and from their own bases at low level- as it just pisses off the local residents.

The other solution is to just go too fast for them to be able to take down your number plate, I have honestly never done this and have no idea where this idea came from.biggrin

well the Q was about how non petrolheads think loud=fast. I would say the button is to make it quieter not louder i.e. should be open unless in a place where you might get pulled over or piss the grannies off! Depends how much of a conscience you have. I was always very aware of the TVR and my neighbours, but those pipes were always open, no switch.

Ok, so I think we agree pretty much apart from the bit about me being a granny hating inconsiderate neighbour with no conscience that always turns his cars up to 11?biggrin
