loud obviously = irresponsibly fast

As I posted on a similar thread a few months ago - I am far more impressed by a fast car that is also quiet. That's real engineering. Many on here seem proud that their car is noisy enough to annoy people! Attention seeking? Showing off? A car is just a means of transport and should be capable of being driven on public roads without generating a level of noise that is a nuisance.
My house is on a main road and, personally, I find the noise generated by small motorbikes far more annoying than any car. However, I do think that drivers of noisy cars should respect the right of others not to be disturbed by unnecessary high noise levels.
However, it is certainly true that many people assume that a higher than average noise level equates to excessive speed. So either put up with that perception or reduce the noise level. The choice is yours.
One of the things you get once the silencing is removed is rasp, accompanied by pops and bangs. While "quiet" is certainly impressive from an engineering perspective, it doesn't put a grin on your face in the same way a car that howls like a touring car does I didn't make my car loud for anyone's attention, and I drive it as quietly as is possible, which is still "not quiet by any means" pretty much, when travelling through built up areas. I bought a loud exhaust for my enjoyment solely, when I find a quiet bit of road and give it a boot through the gears, thats what I bought it for. But as always, this is not right for some cars. Some cars, you want to be fast and quiet, like a Jag. In something a bit more raw and racy, I think a bit of volume adds to the fun - mine, not anyone elses, unless I have a passenger or I'm near another road user who enjoys screaming VTEC noise

When your balls drop, you might find there are other things in life besides your own selfish enjoyment. But as always, this is not right for some cars. Shush now, don't upset Mr Grimnasty - don't you know we should all forsake our hobbies and things we do for enjoyment, as such activities are inherently selfish / bad for the planet / bad for other people?getawayturtle said:

That is why most of us own the cars that we do, for our own "selfish" enjoyment. Otherwise, what is the point?Well my car has been noisy for the last 96 years, I'm not going to silence it now!
My old Triumph Trailblazer 250cc single used to upset a previous neighbour. It did have what was almost a straight through exhaust and was very high compression, but was eminently road legal. I used to love going through in second rather than fourth gear, ever since he made complaints about the noise to the Police.
My Zetec Westfield can be a bit noisy with the Weber 40's and side exit exhaust. I do love the noise but try to be reasonable with it round where I live. Two reasons: the first is that I live in a place full of exactly the sort of people who think noise = speed and every time the exhaust pops a child has probably been killed, and more importantly in my opinion is that we have a large park in the middle of the estate with the road running round the outside on two sides and houses surrounding it on three (plus a school). The result being noise really amplifies, particularly on a still night. I ways try to keep the car at the lowest possible rpm at night. Sadly several Subaru owners with the usual large exhausts couldn't give less of a st.
I had a mostly straight through system on my ST24 (one rear silencer) that was surprisingly sedate for cruising around at town speeds, only really cleared it's throat when you opened the taps. Even used to get a bit of a bang every now and then
I didn't sit outside peoples houses revving the tits off it, however i did start it at 6am outside student accommodation on a regular basis. Serves em right for keeping me awake on a weeknight
