I quite like that. I'd rather a version with the 2.5 i5 from the TTRS+ though.

  • ...google RSQ3...*
Yes, apparently that's exactly what I mean. Plus a remap.

makes you wonder - What's the point of the new RS4?
I suppose the point of the RS4 is that it makes a nicer noise, is still quicker from 0-60 and also will undoubtedly handle better. I think the better question is, what is the point in this car!?

Answer, is probably for people that want the best blend of economy, speed and off road ability and practicality. I love Audi's, and have one, but this relentless idea of theirs, to fill every niche market is getting a little excessive now imo!
Theirs and BMW... apparently we are gonna see a 3 Series GT to go with the monstrosity that is the 5er GT.

I'm pretty sure I read in a car mag (Autocar or Autoexpress) not to long ago, when an Audi exec was having a pop at BMW and Merc by saying that they would never dilute there performance S and RS brands by sticking it on the back of a 4x4!!

I like it, but that mpg figure is just proof of how open to manipulation the current testing regime is. Our new 2 litre TDI A6 only gets 42 average on a medium gearbox setting so God only nows what this would average if you drove it in a vaguely spirited manner.

I would love it with a manual gearbox.

The engine is a great feat, the car as others have said is pointless. I am bias as I hate SUV's, as they are huge and usually rubbish at going off-road (no better than a decent estate at least). Even if this is good at going off-road, no one that buys it will go off-road anyway, it will just be another Chelsea tractor (albeit a fast diesel Chelsea tractor).

This engine in a saloon or estate however...would be brilliant I am sure!

Agree with the pointless car part but the engine does have a point.

Are they doing a similar trick as Vauxhall did with the Meriva VXR? Put the engine into a car they know won't sell brilliantly and use as a public test bed for any errors, this way possible problems are solved before they put it into the A4/5/6.
No they alreay use it in the A6.
Test bed for the forthcoming Porsche Macan - per autocar:

..."Porsche is also in negotiation with Audi to secure the latter’s new 309bhp twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel, recently launched in the A6, for a possible seventh model: the Macan Diesel Turbo. This engine is due to power a hot SQ5 model from September"...

I guess they (the gubbernment) have decided that diesels are worse for the environment etc etc. If you have a big diesel car, with say a kerb weight > 2500kg then it gets really eye watering. (eg FFRR TDV8 costs €3,068 pa to tax) - I always have a little laugh when people complain about 'high' road tax in the UK.

Even run of the mill family estates like a diesel Mondeo are well over €1500pa. For this reason you see a LOT of TSi VAGmobiles and the like, whereas in the UK they are all TDi.

Electric & hybrid cars receive massive concessions here, meaning most years NL is the biggest market in the world for hybrids. I live in a sleepy village in rural NL and there's an electric car charging point in the square and plenty of Opel Amperas / Nissan Leafs on driveways.
Thank you - that's interesting. There is some logic to it as the particulates in diesel aren't too friendly, causing buildings to go black and such. Clearly there is more to the cost vehicle emissions cause than just the volume of CO2 emitted. That does seem to be fairly punchy road tax nonetheless.

If it is currently given an 8 speed auto, doesn't it have a short rev band when your in the sweet spot for power and grunt. Would be swapping cogs back and forth all the time, just to get out of the car park.

8 speed? Sounds like an argument in a primary school playground - "my dads car has 6 gears, its faster than yours". "Nah, my dads car has got 7 gears".... phah says the spotty kid in the corner, "my dad has an AWD 8 speed dual clutch gearbox and is clearly better than everyone else"......

hehe

weve got 8 speed in the wifes toerag and its a pretty smooth box doesnt seem to hunt at all but does put you in the highest gear it can if youre sat at a constant speed for any length of time.

Any potential buyers of one of these on PH? Must admit I am a little curious and will probably trek to a dealer soon to check one out.

Cheers
