When you can't afford the proper 911 so make out that it's a worse car and you prefer your slightly below average one.
It always makes me smile when people post this... A few years back when my younger sister was at a party someone was asking her about my parents 987 Boxster S, she was talking about it when suddenly some guy butted in and said "They only bought it because they couldn't afford a 911"

To which she replied:

"Well actually after buying the Boxster they bought a 911 to accompany the Boxster.. and then they sold the 911 and bought a DB9.. and then they sold that and bought an RS4. Out of all the cars they've owned and bought both my parents think the Boxster S is the best drivers car.. especially on a summers evening when you can put the roof down. So no actually they didn't buy it for that reason"

The guy had no comeback and stood there quite startled. If his jaw had dropped any further he would have struck oil.
I can only assume the whole Box(s)ter/911 thing started as some moronic Clarkson quote....
I mean, people dont go round spouting "You've only got an M3 because you could'nt afford an M5", or an SLK55 because you can't afford an SL55, or a Lotus Elise because you cant afford an Evora.
It's crap spouted by sheep-like simpletons.
I did buy a C2S because I couldn't afford a GT3.
Sincere condolences.

The only reason you bought a Porsche is because you couldn't afford a Pagani.

There are a lot of assumptions out there. You could get really silly and go up to just about everyone and say:

The only reason you're walking is because you couldn't afford to drive

I wish more people were as concerned as he is about the financial health of his fellow PHers! Altruism and selflessness and concern for our vehicle budgets. My hero.

Just looked at your profile.. I'm a graduate design engineer looking at an XJ8/XJ6! biggrin If it wasn't for the rust issues I think I would go for it.

Well that was a nice string of reactions there laugh I was actually just joining in with a common joke related to inadequacy tbh. Porsches are really overrated for the price IMO and if they gave the Cayman a decent engine like the 911's it would walk all over them.

I say go for it, shouldn't have too many structural rust problems with a reasonable X300 or X308. The XJ40 has some nice retro appeal and they are still a decent number of good ones out there. Nothing else has the same sort of character for such a small amount of money, great fun to own.

confused The Boxster is widely recognised as the best in its class and superior to stuff like the SLK, Z4 and TT. The 3.4 engine in the 987 is an absolute cracker and as for road holding it would piss all over anything else in its class. Ok so you've obviously never driven one but don't make assumptions based on what you've read in Top Gear magazine, it's always better to keep an open mind until you can speak from experience.

I'm sure it's the best in its class although on a wet day the TT would come steaming through i think but that's just because of the superior wet grip rather than handling per say.

I've never driven a porsche but my dad's been for a day driving them at silverstone when he was considering getting one and was very dissappointed in the 911 C2S, C4S. They were slow for the price, and had hellish oversteer on the skid pan because of the rear engine issue. The cayman is the best model it's just a shame that porsche won't give it a decent powerplant to use. I don't give a st what topgear say i prefer evo or Car mag as they go into much more engineering detail about the cars.

Well, I'm glad they called it Vanquish rather than DBS. This keeps eveything balanced. Had they called it DBS, then you'd have to specify early, mid or late model DBS when discussing your car. By calling it Vanquish, all V car owners and DBS owners only have to refer to early or late.
I can't imagine that was their main driver for choosing the name. Question is, are they going to slot in a hot version i.e. "new DBS" under this one?
