I see, thanks. The American Football look.
Looks gash, ahm oot.ETA: Can't see one on google now, maybe I've just seen a couple of custom ones.
Either way the X5 strikes me as a bloody awful thing, very big and lumpen, and the tyre costs must be mindboggling with the rear wheels running a couple of degrees of neg camber as well!
What's wrong with that S60? Looks like a good mini-barge to me.

Man, I'd be wanting a five point oh for that kind of money!http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

I was maybe in the wrong. Personally speaking I would like a barge but don't want the running costs associated with them.
The Volvo is a different choice and actually it was a good that something alternative to the Germans was suggested. However, don't Volvo's leave you.... cold? Added to that I thought the part prices for some of them were high enough to make your nose bleed? I may be wrong though.
If someone can find me a barge with great running costs that would be awesome. Not a Lexus LS400 or whatever yet though, I do still have an interesting and sexual life. No Volvo's either since I don't collect a pension or wear a trilby.

I like Volvos full stop tbh. Post-millenium S60/V70/S80's are, in my experience, good-looking, comfy, reliable barges. Parts prices I'm not up on, but they can't be worse than the equivalent BMW/Audi/Merc, can they? The Volvo is a different choice and actually it was a good that something alternative to the Germans was suggested. Tricky question after a barge with minimal running costs - find anything that's had a lot of the troublesome work done on it and you should be off to a good start. hr's 728i is a perfect example - good fuel tank, suspension refurbed, winner!

I used to think the same. The S4 does look a lot more modern, granted. But, the old S2s and especially these 86.5s are probably the best of the lot. I've grown to like the earlier styling As for the S60 Ovlov, yup, its the less obvious choice. I like less obvious.

OK chaps of bargeworld... Looking at the C240 I mentioned properly tomorrow or over the weekend. Its presently being run by my next door neighbour until his new company car arrives so he will chuck me the keys and let me pour over the old girl properly for as long as needed. I know the obvious checks to do on any car, bought enough of the things but anything I need to check on these specifically on the C class?
Had a quick look this morning as I left before him and I had not really looked closely at it as he has been away since we last spoke about it. Body has a few scratches and scrapes but very clean for the age. Interior is spotless which bodes well.
Only £400 I hope so can;t go too badly wrong whatever happens but still, best to know in advance if I need to look at anything specifically.
Also, I may know a really, really nice XJR going for an amazingly good price so checking that out too, but I know those old girls well enough to be ok with checking it out.
Thanks all :-)

Saw 2 x X5's at the auction on Tues;
1 x 2000 X reg 4.4 with 100k went for £3300
1 x 2002 52 reg 3.0i with 100k went for £4100
Both looked tidy, cant remember MOT / Tax on either but they bot had SH and looked smart enough for the money. Clearly a punt, but one i'd take in due course I think.
Anyone any experience of the difference in fuel economy between these in the real world please? (20 mile commute, 17 miles A roads, 3 miles urban)1 x 2000 X reg 4.4 with 100k went for £3300

My total guess is that the 3.0i has got to have better fuel economy, plus less potential for big bills.
My Dad's had had about an owner every year (I think he was the 7th in 7 yrs) implying that people bought them for image, then discovered running costs and moved them on.

I understand the accepted practice is to buy it first.A lex - about what I figured and I know the thing is ok as he just did 250 miles on it in 2 days. Just wanted to check as I am not exactly a mechanical genius. Thanks mate. As you say, how far wrong can I go on what will be the smallest amount I have ever spent on a car, including my first ever car before I passed my test.
Seems like a decent enough mini barge for the winter and potential dog hack car, which is all I really want it for.

Lovely. Should have a space ball gearknob as a T5 though and it's Cedar Green, not Scabby Green (which is a very good thing). Would prefer it with two pedals though. But has it got enough buttons??

The manual 260PS T5 is quicker by the numbers than the heavier and AWD 300PS S60 R too IIRC. No active, switchable dampers to bork expensively either.

Parts can get stupidly pricey - but it depends if you are willing to use 2nd hand bits from breakers and good quality aftermarket parts. Things like brakes, filters and droplinks are as cheap as for anything else.Tricky question after a barge with minimal running costs - find anything that's had a lot of the troublesome work done on it and you should be off to a good start. hr's 728i is a perfect example - good fuel tank, suspension refurbed, winner!
However some quick nightmare examples:
D5 thermostat is £170ish as it comes in a special housing and includes some sensors - you also need to take the aux. belt and PAS pump off to change it I changed the thermostat on my W140 for €15 and it took me all of 15 minutes!
I needed a new fuel filter housing - about 20p worth of plastic. £180 from Volvo as you have to buy the whole fuel filter assembly - eventually got one from a breaker but still paid £30
Nivomat shocks for the self levelling suspension can get very expensive and if you have an R version with the adjustable dampers you had better re-mortgage you house if they need replacing

£400, looks alright, give it a punt, fall in love, you'll still be trundling about in it in three years, having replaced a bulb and hoovered a mat.

Chaps. This is itching away at me for some reason I cannot quite fathom. Maybe it's the V8, maybe it's the double glazing, maybe its the 'fk you' of driving a planet eating 4x4 and never taking it offroad.http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2012...

Talk me out of chopping in an E39 530i Touring for it.
