Having looked at your car history, Jim, I see you've had (and have) both BMWs and Mercs. Was my dislike of the W124 just the result of a short test drive; do they worm their way into your affections with longer exposure?
Looking likewise at your history, pretty much everything you've had (some very nice stuff) has been 'quick'. If that's the vein you wish to continue to jab, a W124 probably won't get you very high. They are on the far side of the modern : old line in my opinion, whereas an E34 (and certainly an E39) sits on the modern side in terms of the way they handle and how the controls feel in comparison to a brand new car.
That said, 'old Mercedes' is a tune that nobody could follow back then, and nobody is trying to follow now. In things like the action of the door handle, ker-thunk of the bonnet and silence of the electric roof, they really are a cut above a BMW.
In other ways, like accuracy of steering and body control and treading the fine line of being good at cruising AND good at hustling, you have to credit BMW.
My E39 523i SE on 15" wheels was the equal of the W124 for 70mph lolloping, but was more fun and much safer to hustle. Yet the W124 has a serenity that the E39 never matches.
The BMW is good at lots of easily measured things - a Daly Thompson. The W124 is an old Oxford science professor - empirically useless at many things, but embodied with a depth and soul and talent for the more esoteric things in life.
And, don't forget the three pointed star. It is ridiculous how much that little trinket adds to the driving experience. For me, anyway, it brings all sorts of warm-and-fuzzies to slide into the firm seat, pull a heavy door closed with a thin, firm handle that mirrors the steering wheel, plug-in a proper key, unlatch the foot-brake and usher slowly forth. Even a £600 Mercedes banger still does that bit beautifully.
In summary - they are stately. A BMW will never be stately.

It's not a minter, but then it isn't priced as one. I like very much.
I'd still prefer the pale green early w201 2.6 that he has at £3250 though.

Fair enough. To be honest I only looked at the pictures the other day, he's now updated the ad with pics of the work needing done etc. Looks like a good punt at that price.
Seems very honest advertiser. TBH I thought the work would be a lot more than that shown in the pics.Just had a quick blast in my mate's x5 4.4. It's a 53 reg with lpg. It felt quite different with the raised seating position. The thrust from the v8 is quite surprising too considering the size of the thing. It wasn't a thorough inspection as its not actually for sale. But overall my impression was good.

Do you know how much road tax is for one of these? My mate made a big deal out of the note on the tax disc about dual fuel. I though pre 2006 the maximum is 250 which is what i have on my S4.
If it's registered with the DVLA as dual fuel you get a discount off the std rate , not much though, £10 I thinkR60EST said:

Does it need an extra MOT type inspection?

Insurance companies want to know about it , some wont insure them for some reason , some don't mind or alter the premium at all so worth checking first. Does it affect insurance?
Does it need an extra MOT type inspection?
There is no legal requirement to do it but an annual service of the system is prudent , keep the receipts for this as you would any other , it's something potential buyers with LPG in mind like to see
One other thing, you cant take them through the Euro tunnel , not sure if some ferry companies have a similar policy
I've owned a RR L322 , so basically the same 4.4 engine and the LPG was not the revelation I was expecting. They say expect a slight reduction in the relative MPG on gas , I found the reduction more than slight , added to the fact LPG is more than 1/2 the price of petrol ( everyone tells you gas is half price ) the gulf between LPG and petrol is not as much as the previous owner led me to believe . Mine also had intermittent starting problems when warm
