Buy an M3. fk the expence.
Its better in every way.
Servicing isnt that bad, you need to find an Indy who doesnt overcharge.
I was paying less than £450 insurance and £440 for an Inspection 1.
Brake discs and decent tyres are pricey though.
He has 7k to spend, buy an m3 is st advice.

st is easily mapped to over 300bhp and bmws are nice but boring, least with a focus the morons you work with wont say the emortal lines

" you must be earning too much"
You will need a lot more than a re-map to get 300bhp. Intercooler, induction, exhaust, sports cat (or de-cat) for a start.

What about an e36 m3. A really clean original one?

Took the wifes car for MOT yesterday, there was an avus blue E36 M3 evo, really really good nick, looked stunning even the black vaders were unmarked, spent a good 10 minutes dribbling over it.

Theyre quicker than they look. Certainly a lot quicker than a 330.

And rarer.

The e36 coupe has aged really well too IMO.

I have a budget of 7 grand really, do about 10,000 miles a year and can afford 25 MPG defintely. Space is not that important to me and won't need to carry too many people. The reason I was looking at these 2 cars because they have both become available. A friend owns a ST and needs a quick sell so I can get that an 06 plate, 60,000 miles, cheap. Another colleuge has a bmw 325ci, similar miles. Hopefully, this should help in your opinions!
Thats not cheap mate, you can have mine for £7,500. Its black had 2 owners including me and has less than 37000. Msg me if interested. Oh and yeah st is better unless your looking at an m3. St is quicker, nicer and more practical than a 330i.

Edit: sorry mis-read, you havent put the price of your mates st. My offer still stands though smile

OP, a lot of people would like to help you but we need more info to go on. What's your budget? How many miles do you do and what sort of MPG can you afford?

Have you got to carry large amounts of horse manure on a daily basis or is room for a single briefcase sufficient?

Do you need to carry lots of people (ie, do you carry rear doors?)

Give us info to go on and we can help you a lot more.

Drive both.
This is probably the best advice on this thread. Still, I'll offer one more chestnut: You don't have to buy either. As has been said neither is very cheap for what's on offer.

More than likely will go for the ST as friend only wants 5200 for it, my old man's a mechanic so will have a look at it tomorrow. Otherwise your ST would sound ideal! Thanks

Do you need a largish 5 seater family car with a big boot though? You can go faster and have more fun for £5200 IMO than a Focus ST.

There are loads...

but depends on many things, such as being older, less 'normal', more out of the box. Will you like to tinker on it and not give a chuff what mates or the supposed "in crowd" think is cool?

I'm assuming as you seem happy with the 19-24mpg the ST offers, that other cars using similar amounts of fuel would not be an issue?

Will you ever need to carry extra people or stuff and what types of roads would you be driving on. And is it about speed or fun?

I won't post any real options up until you've answered a few of the Q's. But essentially you could look at turbo MX-5's, thru GTM Libra's, classic Lotus's to V8 muscle cars.

As possibly mentioned before, the Focus ST is only a 5 seater in ST1 & ST2 spec without the optional sculpted rear seats that are standard on the ST3 that make it a 4 seater. So 5 seater will be a horrible cloth interior rather than full black leather.
